My neighbor needed a wedding gift for her grand daughter.  I have built three of these and I believe the original plan came from Woodcraft.  The horizontal slats are doweled.

Nice tight joints well executed workmanship, nice proportions to the finished project.  Getting a simple project just absolutely dead correct is more difficult than many people realize, and methinks you just nailed it...no pun intended!
