May 15, 201313 yr I built this box this week (thanks to a plan in this months Wood mag) and I'm thinking about making a few more for summer shows. Some of you folks do shows and I'm a bit up in the air as to how much to charge. what would this bring in your area?  BTW, this one is maple and walnut and I'm going to change the design a bit. I think the walnut insert on the top is recessed to deep.  Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
May 16, 201313 yr Well Ron,it's going to have a lot to do with venue I believe. Is it a big show, little show? Small town show, crafters show?If it's a show geared for woodworkers, like a show that hosts a competition, displays for woodworkers, demo etc, chances are it won't sell, because? Well because woodworkers are going to the show! Now if we got a show that is geared to a farmers market style of venue, then it should do well I would think. Right here in my own little area, we have a dynamic mix of groups and areas. Here in my town, it may go for 20 bucks, drive up the road to our local mountain town of Idyllwild where an art community thrives and folks from all over Southern Ca go to buy fine art, and if you had that box setting on a shelf in a studio with other fine art, I guarantee you it would fetch upwards of 150 only because the folks who travel there appreciate this work, and know what they are looking at, and know the hand work that was involved, and just like the idea of it being "Craft Made" and not some knock off from Pier 1 Imports. So, there is something to chew on, it has to be priced per the market in your area, I can only speak for my immediate area here in my little corner of the world, I'd price it at around sadly 30 or 40 dollars, knowing that it's worth much more, but because I am where I am, and just wanting to move it, that is what I would have to put on it.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
May 16, 201313 yr Ron, I tend to agree with John. Location, location, location. With the exception of one Flea Market in my area the best you could hope for is $20-25.00. At the one Flea Market, (where alot of people from the more affluent areas in N. Illinois come from) the same box would fetch $100-125.00 easily. (The above mentioned people have deeper pockets, easily told by the vehicles they drive in the parking area.)  Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host
May 16, 201313 yr Author This will be an interesting show because the festival (Summerfest) is brand new. Their goal is to bring a higher clientel to the area so I don't know what kind of traffic to expect. One thing is for sure. I won't give them away. Heck, I'll made Christmas gifts out of them.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
May 16, 201313 yr If all of them don't sell, let me know and I'll send you my address for sending a Christmas present. :-)Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton

May 16, 201313 yr Seriously, though - I would put some of that spry-on flocking in it and raise the price to around $50 for a standard fine craft juried show. If the show is in an affluent area and you don't have to worry about other party goers meeting you at another show, put a "Show Special" sign on it and raise the price by $10 or $15. May 17, 201313 yr not sure how to price. But I would not mind having one myselfhttp://www.prchestnut.webs.com/
May 17, 201313 yr I would certainly put it in the $40,00 -$50.00 range. It is a good middle of the road price. You can go up if you need to and easily drop it a bit if you feel you have to. There is a guy here that does shadow boxes and he does several shows I do, he get any where from 30.00 up for shadow boxs. The 30.00 is a bit smaller than your box. Best of luck.. By the way people tell me I am selling boards too cheap. These are people that make them of course they aren't in the show. Said they couldn't make any money. Must be priced too high cause I been selling a bunch of them. I guess to each his on. John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
May 17, 201313 yr Reminds me of the story about the guy who put a used refrigerator on the curb with a "FREE" sign on it. After three days it was still there. So he put a "FOR SALE" sign with his phone number and a price of $75.00.It was gone the next morning and he got 15 calls asking about it.BTW Ron, I turn 13 next week.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' May 19, 201313 yr Ron, I don't do shows so I can't give you any feed back on that. I did what to say "NICE BOX".Somewhere in Kenya.... a village is missing its idiot! Alaskans for Gobble Warming
May 20, 201313 yr It is always best if you can mate up your prices to the market in which it'll be offered. If the people have plenty of expendable income then you charge a lot, if not then you either don't charge much or go elsewhere. It also helps to know how sophisticated the market place is. Are they demanding and refined and do they know good work from mediocre? Will your work meet or even exceed expectations? In one market, I saw a lousy music stand sell for six digits. It wasn't even that remarkable of a stand. It was pretty. Maybe the artist was famous? I don't know.
June 1, 201313 yr Author I decided to make a sibling for this box. This one is hinged and made of ash and walnut. It looks like oak but it really is ash. Here tis.  Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
