Friday, August 9th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda this Weekend?

Featured Replies

Are the days just flying by or what? This seems like it was the fastest week, but it may have been since I got to do a little work and stayed busy it seem to be faster.

I got a cutting board in the first of the two glue ups last night. Followed that will a little more sanding on the cedar chest then took two of the old hand planes that I recently got and gave them a good cleaning. I took everything off the base of the plane and blew it off with some air just to get rid of the old sawdust residue. Took a rag and put a little, not a lot, of oil on it and wiped everything down good. The oil is just enough to help pick up the dust, dirt and left over sawdust. I took a small brass wire brush and wiped over any surface rust that was on the plane. The nice thing is the brass brush is easy enough not to remove the patina, but get the surface rust off. Then I cleaned it with a dry cloth. Taking some Johnson's Paste Wax I went over the entire body of the plane putting a good coat on. Gave it a few minutes then took another clean cotton cloth and wiped everything off and put a nice slick finish on. This will also protect it just like you would your cast iron table tops. Then a small drop of oil on the adjustment screw and the point where the adjustment fork attaches. A light coat of wax on the tote and knob and buffed them off with a clean cloth. I'll get some pictures and add later, but they look really nice and didn't do any thing aggressive to the plane.

First the No. 3 before the cleaning.

ning-img-0138-10451-59.jpgAnd the No. 3 after.

ning-img-0507-10451-72.jpgning-img-0506-10451-44.jpgning-img-0505-10451-16.jpgAs you can see, it makes the japanning really stand out and you can tell it is not in as bad a shape as you think when first looking at it. For a plane from 1899-1902 it is in good shape with a nice patina to it.

And the number No. 4 which is a Type 6 1888-1892

Before

ning-img-0354-10451-39.jpgning-img-0356-10451-96.jpgning-img-0355-10451-15.jpgAnd then the after with the cleaning.

ning-img-0498-10451-93.jpgning-img-0494-10451-49.jpgYou might also note that this brass adjust has the Baily Pat. Date Aug. 31, 1858, Aug. 6, 1867 inside the ring.

ning-img-0497-10451-64.jpgning-img-0501-10451-95.jpgIt now has a nice warm glow and patina.

This weekend I will be getting the skirt and legs cut and assembled on the cedar chest and make the second glue up in the cutting board. Those will be my major projects in the shop this weekend and if time permits, I have some plastic boxes under my work bench that I keep cauls for clamping my broads with when I do the glue ups. I have different sizes based on the board size. I hope to build some runners under the clamps on my workbench to get them off the floor and allow me to slide them in and out when I need them like a drawer. Keeps them out of the floor yet close at hand.

So that is my agenda, what's on your woodworking agenda this weekend? Are you starting a nice new family heirloom, shop jig, rebuilding an old tool or piece of machinery, applying finish to a project, home improvement, lawn work, cleaning the shop, or getting some much needed R&R from the Honey Do List? Those of us here at TPW love to hear about your projects and see them. Please post pictures here in the Woodworking Forum and share you project with us. Tell us a little about it, wood you used, plans for the project, gift or to sell. We love to see those and hear all about them.

So what are you waiting for, the whole family is waiting with great anticipation and excitement to see your project.

ning-img-0484-10451-81.jpgGo to Forums at the top menu, select "Woodworking" then click on "ADD" and post away and tell us all about your project. I just know my family will jump with excitement when you post your project here in this forum.

No woodworking this Saturday.

Grandkids will be here because dad and mom are picking up the gun cab.

Once that's loaded, it's off to exploring the trails with the two grandkids on the Polaris. With puppy time thrown in, too. And can't forget a kebab bbq and Grandma's cookie and mik time. Busy Saturday.

They leave early Sunday for the 5 hr drive back to Tucson. Then, I can start on assembling the new-to-me Shopsmith.

Got lots of plans for projects in the coming months. Been saving it all till the gun cab was gone.

Four jewelry cases, a Mathias Wandel router duplicator, a drill press table, a marble topped end table, and a bunch more boxes as the fancy strikes me.

No woodworking for the next couple of weeks. I'm on a road trip (1200 miles each way ) to S. Calif. to visit family and friends. Meeting up with Allen and hopefully John Morris at some point in time.

When I get home I'll check more on a new scrollsaw and order it.

Harry, if you come through AZ on 40, give me a holler. We're a hop skip and a jump from 40.

We are almost finished installing the 3/4 inch solid red oak flooring in the third and final bedroom.  It's been quite a project doing the entire house except for the bathrooms and laundry room.  Still have wood baseboards to install.  The end is near and we are thrilled!  jumping_smiley01

Stopped here to put more underlayment down so we could finish the job.

Had my nasal surgery done on Wednesday and it is kicking my butt far more than I expected. Eyes watering and snot flowing and all my energy being sucked out of me. So I have been doing a lot of reading and nap taking. I go back and see the doctor on Monday to take out all the stuffing in my nose and then again on Thursday to get the stitches out. With Harry Brink out here in So. Calif. we will be getting together later next week sometime and hopefully will be able to hook up with John Morris. But those plans are to be determined.

Lew,

Thanks so much!  So happy to have the stack of flooring and tools out of the house!  It's beginning to look like a home again.  bouncysmiley2

Heaven forbid -  I'm reading up on how to tile a shower.  Would like to someday remove tub & shower unit and make it a shower only.

Seems the projects never end.  confused-smiley

Know what you mean about the tub and shower. Our home was built tin the early 50's and has the tub built into the end of the room. The only way to get it out is to cut it or sledge hammer it into pieces. The the problem becomes what to replace it with- another tub and shower or just a shower. Maybe it's time to call "Bath Fitters"!

Lew,

This waterproofing application for showers looks interesting.  http://www.schluter.com/8_4_kerdi_shower_kit.aspx

We have a fiberglass tub/shower combo which we are not real fond of. Should be easy to cut it into pieces and pack it out of there.  :)  Listen to me hahaha I'm already planning the demolition.

I'll be working on a Honey Locust bowl this weekend and if I manage to get that done, I'll be making a few pens. I got one here that I have put off for several months that i want to get done :) so I will be hard at work or hardly working as some put it :)

well went an picked up a router table w/router from Harbour Freight, its a table top model,so I have to make a worktable for it to sit on since my work bench is just a little bit tall an full of stuff, hahaha, have to put it on rollers so I can roll it out of way when not in use, will send pics, wife says need to expand soon or I will have no room to move, will test it out on some shelves I need to make for a collection I have.

Decided it was time to made my own frames. This frame is 2 ft x 4 ft with 1/4 inch reveal, mitered corners, and groove in the frame to inset the 1/8th inch thick hardboard.  :)    Best part is I can now create any size I want!  happy-smiley58
