Friday, August 16th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda this Weekend?

Featured Replies

Got some lumber milled down last night for the bottom to the cedar chest but couldn't find my jig so I will have to make a new one. Got out the pattern to make the new jig. Will work on that this weekend and maybe get the chest closer to getting finish in it. Seems every time I get to working on this thing I get side track with something and don't get very far, But that is going to chance (I Hope).

After milling the lumber last night and walking all around the shop and looking for the jig, I decided to clean up the Stanley No.18 I got this week. Still waiting on the lateral lever to arrive and it should be here today or Saturday.

So here is a shot of the Stanley No. 18 before I cleaned it up.

ning-img-0616-10238-99.jpgning-img-0615-10238-49.jpgAnd here are a few shots after the clean up and a little waxing and oiling.

ning-img-0629-10238-48.jpgning-img-0633-10238-81.jpgning-img-0631-10238-99.jpgning-img-0630-10238-40.jpgI gave the blade a good sharping on the WorkSharp and ran it across the edge of a cedar board I had laying on the bench.

ning-img-0626-10238-98.jpgning-img-0628-10238-36.jpgSo I believe this will be a nice little work horse plane. The japanning was in really good shape with very little of it missing. The sides have a nice patina to them and I will leave the as they are.

So what is on your woodworking agenda this weekend? Are you building a new jig, starting a new project, cleaning the shop, restoring an old piece of equipment, HDL, yard work, home improvement and taking the weekend for some much needed R&R? We here at TPW love to see the projects you post here in the forums and tell us something about them. So we are all waiting with great anticipation to see what you will be working on this weekend.

The whole family has gathered up and are all excited as you can see about what you are working on. Please post in this thread what you're working on this weekend.

Having breakfast right now at my local Chick-Fil-A and will then do a couple of errands before heading to home to start reclaiming my shop. My wife is back to work in her classroom and all of her stuff has been removed from my shop with the exception of a few empty plastic tubs which I will put in her storage shed. I had my nasal surgery on Wednesday August 7th and it really kicked my butt far more than expected. I was pretty much down for almost a whole week with blurry eyes and not being able to eat much. Yesterday I went back into the doctor and got all of the packing and stitches taken out and now I can breath better than before the surgery. There is still some swelling which will take a few more weeks to go down, but for the most part I am back to 100% which is wonderful!

Tomorrow (Saturday) Harry Brink will be driving to my house and we will hang out a bit and then make the drive over to hang out with our "Fearless Leader" John Morris. I am sure that there will a more than a few far fetched stories told as well as a lot of laughter. There will also be some photographic evidence coming so that the 3 of us will all have plausible deniability when the black helicopters show up.

Trying to get the bowl finished that I started recently. I don't know what it is but every time i think a bowl is deep enough, I find that it is only about half as deep as it should be AFTER I take it off the lathe, so I will have to re mount it carefully in the chuck so as not to have to re-cut the thing all over again, and take another half inch or so out of the inside and then see if that is finally enough. I think it will be. Then I can finally get a finish on it and call it done. If that isn't enough to do, I will be making a few pen's as time allows. Have a fun and safe weekend all, I will be around.

Sweet little plane, John!

Aren't those old photographs fantastic! You have to wonder how many of the "phone photos" will be around 150 years from now.

As for me, I just came in from a trip to the lumber mill. Got some Poplar to build a couple of little chairs and table leg extensions for the next door neighbor. She's going to home school her kids and needs to create a work/study area.

4/4 Poplar was $1.35 bdft.

Nice little bowl Charles! I have some Honey Locust bowl blanks drying now. Nice to be able to get an idea of what they will look like when the finish hits them.

Thanks Lew. Yep it's some of the prettier grained wood that i have turned so far. Speaking of turnings, I seem to recall getting a small package in the mail recently that had a bunch of cut out pieces for a segmented turning, I'll have to pull that out later and see what all is involved with that too, There was suspiciously, no return address, just a note with my address in the box and no instruction either so it should be fun to figure out LOL thanks :)

Thanks Lew, I love the old photos of family and it seems to make them more real than just hearing stories about them. My mom has a lot of these and has been sharing them with me on our Wednesday night visit. We usually spend time on Wednesday night talking about the family and tracing our family roots. She will drag out a box of pictures I didn't know she had and I helped to move them to her place.

I love the old poses the families would be in also. Sit still, don't breath and don't move. They couldn't smile cause they couldn't breath. LOL.

Sounds like you got a good project coming up and a good price on the poplar. Look forward to seeing to progress and finished shots. My daughter is home schooling their middle daughter this year so I may have to take a few notes from you.

Thanks

Nice looking bowl Charles. I know that is frustrating to have to remount it. I hope it goes well. It looks really good now.

Thanks John, I considered leaving the inside as is and just work the outside and thus making a shallower bowl, and I still may do that if I can't get it re mounted the way I want. no sense in messing up a perfectly good bowl just trying to make it deeper.

Beth and I was discussing the same thing just the other day. Phones die and people don't have them backed up and all those photos and memories are gone.

Same thing with documents. My mom gave me my grandfathers Honorable Discharge Papers from the Army in 1919 the other day. They are neatly folded in a leather cover. It is nice to look the old documents up and see them on screen, but nothing like holding the original in your hand and feeling the leather cover, knowing that his hands once proudly held that some cover and how proud he was of those papers.

The new electronic age is great and things are at your finger tips, but it just doesn't have the same feeling as accessing the real documents. I know it preserves them for all time, at least we hope, but I like to hold them in my hands.

Glad you received it. Thought you might be able to create some sort of segmented turning from the pieces.

Yes indeed, if nothing else, at least a few rings of a bowl followed by a solid base.

I have a cord that goes from my phone, directly to the USB port on the computer. I also have the ability of uploading (sharing) directly to Facebook. As long as one has at least one of those methods, there should be no loss of pictures. Photobucket may also have a way to upload images from the phone directly to Photobucket.

I hope this helps to save some images at least that some of you may have (stuck) on your phones.

God bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

Neat family picture, John. Too bad about the Jig, but finding that router wasn't a bad trade, no?

Allen, I know that you, Harry and John will have a blast. Wish I were there, too. Don't worry about the black helicopters. Watch for the drones, though. Good to read that everything seems to be healing well. Bet you've seen enough of hospitals for a while.

That is some beautiful wood, Charles, and nice turning, too. It'll all work out, I'm sure.

Lew, looking forward to seeing those chairs! And,  the table leg extensions sound interesting, too.

Wayne, Can't wait to see that Pub Sign. (if it's G Rated :-) )

Taking a cue from Moody's lost jig experience, I'm continuing some shop arranging, exploration and excavation today. Yesterday I had a visitor (no pics). A Tarantula crawling up the wall behind a work area. She was a beauty. I gently removed her to the room where I store the plywood. I'll check on her when I go out there this morning.

As soon as the boring stuff is done, I'll be starting on assembly of my new to me shopsmith. With my outstanding mechanical abilities and attention deficits, OH LOOK, A PUPPY.... it shouldn't take me more than a few weeks to get it up and running.

I know what you mean Gene, even while I was looking for the jig I noticed a lot of dust on the scroll saw so I started cleaning it and then saw something on the work bench that need to be put away then happened to think about something I left in the house and then got in the house and remembered I was looking for the jig, Wow this wears me out.

Finally made a little progress late this afternoon. I remade my jig for the legs and got them mitered, cut, sanded and attached to the chest.

Hinges and trim to the top tomorrow night and a final sanding and it will be ready for finish. Man this has taken for ever.

John, if you look at the old photos all the people looked mad.  Here's the reason.  Because the lens exposure time was so long they had to keep the same expression or the photo would blur.  You can't keep a smile even or the same all the time because the facial muscles won't hold a smile.  Therefore, they all looked mad.
