October 29, 201312 yr Patriot Woodworkers! We were contacted by a Captain stationed in Afghanistan, and she would like to know if we could produce 5 coin displays for us to ship off to her for her guys. This is a charity effort, no money is exchanged, and no reimbursements except for shipping are made to the volunteer(s). Here is a link to the typical displays we make and ship off to our troops at no charge to them. Challenge Coin Displays The above link shows how we make ours, but you are more then welcome to get as creative as you want. The displays will be shipped directly from your home to an APO in Florida, The Patriot Woodworker will incur the shipping costs. We hope some or one of our folks will step up and help us out. We are always so very grateful for your efforts to help us help our troops. Thank you Patriot Woodworkers!!! To view some of our Challenge Coin Display recipients please go to MEET OUR HERO'S Photo Below is a group of Marines who contacted us a few months ago with a request, they stand with our displays proudly made by our members. October 29, 201312 yr Author Donald thank you very much! I'll message you at lunch time pac time zone!
October 29, 201312 yr Author OK Donald, first off thank you for answering the call. The way you can help is first determine if you wish to build all 5 displays or just a few or one. This will give us an idea of how many more we need etc. We provided the link above on how we make ours. You can use that plan, or you can use your own creative ideas, the plan we use is nice because they ship well. You can pack em in a flat rate box easily. The biggest thing with these displays is we do require a level of perfection. They should be sanded to a very smooth surface, at least 320 but higher grits is encouraged, and we use the BLO for our finish, it is easy, wipe on wipe off you are done, and the surface is glassy smooth from your sanding. We like to write a message on the bottom of each one. Something nice, an appreciative message of support such as "Thank you for your service, please come home safe" etc. Then you can sign it or put your family name on it. This is the most important part of this duty. We have received so many messages from troops, stating how important that message was at the bottom of the display, it was even more important then the display itself in some cases. Once you have them finished up, you can box em and put a letter in the box, stating you are a member of The Patriot Woodworker, and perhaps you can further a message on paper stating your appreciation of the job they are doing over seas. We'll get the shipping money sent to you Donald. I am in touch with the Captain, and she is ready to receive some displays. Let me know if you need further instructions Donald, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking this on!!!! I will email the address to you if you are good to go on this very important mission. Best to ya Donald R. Holmes II said: I'm interested ... how do I get in on this? October 29, 201312 yr John,First off, thanks for the welcome to the site and forums. Â I've already checked my wood stocks and will be able to make all 5 of them. Â There may be a few minor variations in size due to stock-on-hand issues.Right now it's looking like there will be two each of walnut and quarter sawn white oak, and the fifth will be either Caribbean Rosewood or Bubinga. Â Will these be acceptable choices? It will take me a little while as I will have to glue up stock for one, and my woodworking is limited to weekends due to my work schedule.Best,Don H.
October 30, 201312 yr I got started on one of them today, and it's now ready for finishing. Â I don't have any BLO; would Watco Danish Oil be an acceptable alternative?
October 31, 201312 yr Author Hey Donald, if you get any pictures of your efforts we'd love to see them!!!! Hope it's all going well.Donald R.
