June 3, 201411 yr My daughter wanted a wood snack bar in her back yard. She knows little about wood and the effects of sun and the elements can have on wood, especially at a mile high altitude we have here. Then I told her the cost of real wood, real Oak. The next day she called and said she had the wood. ??????????? She knows little about wood, but had found something on Craigs list. I went to the place and it was a single guy who must have had some sort of divorce problems and wanted to sell some Oak. He had Three pieces 8 feet by 14 inches by an inch and a quarter thick. Plus another thinner piece he would toss in for $150, All were finished and beautiful. Anyway this is how it turned out, The support posts are the spike kind you drive in the ground I had never used them. It took some trial and error, but it came out good and amazingly strong. The bar is in the shape of a J and the pictures are looking from both directions
June 3, 201411 yr That looks great! I'll bet those post supports were hard to get in straight so the posts were plumb!
June 3, 201411 yr Nice work, Ron. I'll bet she will really enjoy it. Seems like I've recommended these guys a lot. I really don't have any interest in the company. It's just that they seem to send me an ad for something useful quite often. This time it may be a product you may be able to use, Ron.
June 3, 201411 yr Author Gene, the reviews were not all that great. I think I'll hold off and see how well the stuff I put on holds up. Thanks for the info
June 3, 201411 yr Author They were a learning curve special. Our first one was off and had to be repositioned because we used a level on the driving post. It wasn't close to plum. When we used the eye ball, it went much better. Hammer a couple times, stop, walk about 15 feet away and make corrections if needed. Â Repeat untill corrections can no longer be made.
October 19, 20169 yr Author I used a high quality deck stain/finish. However, I warned my daughter that I'm sure it has regular glue holding it together. Its been two years and it did warp and some of the board glue joints came apart. I took my big Bessy clamps, water prof glue and glued them back, as good as I could. Then after sanding and refinishing with deck finish again, it looks pretty good. I'd bet it will do it again, just a matter of time. Then it will be "Hey dad, could you do.........................."

The sun is so intense in this thin air at this elevation 6000 ft and along with very low humidity, it can ruin about any finish. I'll try their product next time I refinish it. I made a porch swing with high quality finish on it and it lasted one year. The only finish that would stay on for a couple of years was porch and deck paint. I hated to cover that beautiful Cherry wood, but it had to be done
