July 7, 201411 yr Upon further review. Seems a better stash has been found. tore down a bed frame into usable parts. Oh, I will still use some of the metal parts. But the metal parts are just to reinforce the workbench. What you see here are six raised panels. Never mind about Buster sitting there. There are also some other parts worth saving some of them a bit long. LOTS of staples that need to go...elsewhere. Will have to bring the saws up out of the Dungeon Shop, and a few clamps. Clamp a piece to the saw bench, and rip or crosscut until I have all the parts for another Tool Chest build. With some better trays, I hope. Oh and there are a few that need to be split Those aren't solid 4x4s, and some are delaminating. Going to split them into the three pieces they are made from. Some will be corner posts. Along with the 1 x 12s, and all that extra Barn siding stuff. It might take a while, but I think I might have the time right now to build it. As for Buster? Brand new handle for a $1 head. Went to Lowes to buy a handle.....nope, they don't sell those kind of handles. However, they would be more than happy to sell me a 2 pound Kobalt version.....for $17...Yeah, right. Took my 2.9 pound hammer head just up the road to the local TSC store, yep even had the correct handle with wedges (3) for.....$5.99 + tax. got it home, installed the new handle, and put it to work, breaking down a bed frame. Must have done it right ( for once) since the head never moved, or flew off. Some days.. you just get...lucky.
July 8, 201411 yr Author I'll get pictures tomorrow, but a run down of today's episode: Saw blade was DULL, saw was getting almost too hot to hold onto. Went out and bought a new blade, after all the first cuts were done. $4 blade for a $5 saw....SHEESH!All the raised panels have bben satcked to one side.....one set is 1" wider than the other???? Need two LONG panels for a front and back. Might make an adjustment in the back one. Out of sight, out of mind..The two long 4x4s were a three board glue up, but not the two short 4x4s. Getting the long 4x4s split into three boards was a FIGHT. Will take a bit of plane work to make four of them presentable. Corner post parts.Other items were trimmed of bad, or naily junk. One had bed hardware still imbeded in it...anyone need a full set of steel hooks?Be back later, with more about this mess...
July 9, 201411 yr Author Day 2. Not much got done. medical set backs. Every time I went out Mother nature wanted to rain on my working outside at the saw bench. Did get a few cut to length, between the thunderstorms. I'd wait until the blue sky came back, haul out the saw and stuff, make a few cuts, and raindrops......Guard is sticking on the saw. Weak return spring, or dust & grime build up? New blade seems to work ok. At least on crosscuts. Found a screw buried in a hole, or rather, half of the threaded part, I think the saw took the rest away.laying out some sizes on a (First for me) notepad ( PAPER) and it is loking like 35" long, maybe 15" deep, front to back. Height? Trying for around 20" again. Maybe some Fancy-schmanzy stuff to this one. No drawers, not enough room for them, AND me down there in the shop. Whole chest will roll out, raise a lid, pick through the trays, and put it back under the bench. Them steel item? Reinforce the bench's legs, I'm taking out the stretcher between the ends, need to replace it with something..Finish? Depends on what I find for the wood.....
July 10, 201411 yr Oh ya, I can see a tools chest in there for sure!!! Are you going to use the raised panels Steve for the sides? Edited November 7, 201510 yr by John Morris
July 11, 201411 yr Author Or, maybe not. Raised panels are starting to split. One has a paper-like backing on it. One of the large ones is starting to split, AND shed it's so-called finish.Bout ready to strip it all down to bare wood. Scrub plane things that don't belong. Might even have to sharpen the irons a bit on them. Got a POUND of small staples, and "pin" nails out of some of the boards, still have one screw to dislodge.Compared to going out to the Amish, and BUYING the wood for this, I guess I can make do...
July 11, 201411 yr Author Bad boards This is a Paper product glued to the back of a raised panel. They also STAPLED the panel in place. Panels are now splitting right where a staple was Bad finish is just flaking off. You can also see some of the cracking going on. Cheap stuff..... A bit fuzzy, but you get the idea. Splits aren't even on a straight line. Makes it a bit rough to reglue these up. Rest of the stash is about ready to meet the Scrub planes. One 5/4 x 4" is on the bench, and has been scrubbed down flat. WILD grain!
July 12, 201411 yr Author One leg has been S4S and ready to mill into a corner post. Leg #2 is sitting on the bench, awaiting my return......Work schedule at my "Day Job" Next four nights,,,12 hr shifts 1900 to 0710. One night off, then two more nights "on" Back to work, again.....not sure how long, though.
July 14, 201411 yr Author Snuck down to the shop for ONE hour.....two more leg blanks are flat S4S on one, the other two have a fancy face to them. Well at least THAT part is flat. Scrub planes, and the scrub plane operator are getting a work out! I am soaked! Ankle deep in THICK shavings down there. Might have to bring a fan down there.....
July 14, 201411 yr Author just scrubbing away the stuff I don't need. Corsair C-5 scrub jack This is a look at the face of that board, after the scrub jack and this Stanley #5 got done with it.
November 7, 201510 yr I have been going through some of our archives from the forum down below, cleaning up the bad text and characters in the topics that populated our site after the move over, and I am seeing some wonderful discussions that took place back in the day. This was a good follow along by Steve Newman. Great job Steve!
