July 19, 201411 yr Elm is beautiful. It needs to be treated with BLO and then if you want to use a water soluble like General Finishes pre cat 181 ya gotta do a  wash coat with shellac to seal in the BLO which no matter what the so called experts say never completely cures and never completely dries. An alkyd doesn't need the shellacElm is not a very hard wood about like cherry or maybe a tad softer. It dries and seasons up from green very very nicely with little more than an end grain treatment and it dries fast too. It works like a dream, machines up easily tends to have little tension in it so when you cut it, it stays just like you cut it. It takes glue and finishes like a dream. It is springy, makes good bows, and takes nails and screws well without splittingI have a garage full of Siberian Elm from some 100 year old trees I took down. I love the stuff.
