Friday October 16th, 2026 - What's on Your Weekend Agenda?

Featured Replies

Friday again, that sure was a quick week.

Here "Two Weeks From Anywhere" we're about to go through a weather whiplash.

It was 87 degrees on Monday, now a Frost/Freeze Warning until 9:00 AM tomorrow.

So as we're about to get our first blast of that winter type weather,

What's on Your Weekend Agenda?

Got to trim a tree hanging over my driveway in AZ, and do some general yard cleanup. I brought a shovel back from NM last weekend, so I will probably plant the 4 TX Mountain Laurels I have in pots. A neighbor over there has one so I collected some seeds a couple years ago and got 4 of them sprouted. Probably get a better success ratio next time I try, the seeds have a really hard coating that is very difficult to scarify, but after not much luck with 22 of them, I realized I could scuff them across a little diamond cutting disk from HF. Anyway, these plants like heat and water, one of which I have in abundance in AZ! Not so much in NM, but they will grow there too. When they blossom in the spring you get about 2 weeks where they smell like grape sweet tart candy.

Really windy this morning, I'm a bit worried the tar paper came off my roof work from last weekend. It will be fixable if it did, better that than having the OSB sheathing get soaked by the hurricane remnants. Wind reminds me I need to trim the branches overhanging the house too, they are scraping on the metal roof. I should have brought a ladder back along with the shovel, but then I would probably leave it here and miss it next time I'm over there.....

The nice thing here is it's finally cooled off. Walking to work every morning the last couple weeks, and this week I've mostly walked back too. About a 2 mile walk each way, so a good bit of exercise.

Another week of theater set construction. I stopped by yesterday and the city is doing a major rehab project all around the shop. There was a crew cutting down and chopping up trees. The local news was there filming.

that was messy:

tenant in my guesthouse complained that the door was hard to shut. we recently had some rain, and some water got into things, swelling the wood under the threshold, and making it hard to close. no sweat. sand and grind down the plastic piece (had already exhausted the screw adjustment), much better. and while i'm at it, my prior repair of the rotted bottom of the frame (both sides) was letting go, so out comes the bondo, work that into the void, let it cure, paint it tomorrow.

wood framing out here just does not work. sigh.

I'm in the process of making the mounts on the underside of my table for mounting the top. There are four of these shown that are spaced ¼" from frame. A dowel is driven through and into frame allowing for any expansion.

Right now, waiting on a line of thunderstorms to pass over us. The tops of the storm clouds are visible to the north- 85 miles away!. Currently 85° degrees by tomorrow night the forecast temperature is to be 32°. Looks like most of the garden will be done for. Will be planting my garlic after the frost/freeze.

This week I made another cross. This one is for my granddaughter's best friend that saw the one I made for her and went ga-ga over it so granddaughter asked me to make on for the friend.

The only thing I have planned for the weekend is to help my daughter install a dashcam in her truck. I installed one in my truck last weekend.

I received a shipment of scroll saw blades yesterday ( including some aluminum cutting blades, we'll see ). I received my Amazon order today, which included 3, 4 x 8 18 gauge aluminum sheets. I going to be cutting "backing plates" for the outlet covers. According to the NEC outlet covers are required to have a fireproof rating or a fireproof backing plate. The 18 gauge aluminum meets the NEC code, and would be the easiest to cut. Depending on difficulty, I may switch to the aluminum for the covers although I prefer the look of wood..

Now I know why the designers switched to "outlet surrounds" . ☹️

Went on a short hike at an Arkansas state park. Saw this tree and wondered what the grain would look like! 🤔

Looks like Hickory. Is it?

Good question! I have no idea. I wish I was better at tree identification (I'm sure there's an app for that!).

I'm fairly certain it is looking at the leaves. Hickory has amazing grain. The burl would be a gem.

This might help

My Tree ID Mobile App

My Tree ID helps identify tree species based on leaves, flowers, seed, bark or location using a key, descriptions, and full-color images.

Looks like Barb has started her journey down that slippery slope 🤣 wonder if there is a lathe in her future WonderScratch

There's an app named Seek that's pretty good at identifying most plants and animals. My wife has it on her phone.

Here's a link.

The camper is closed for the year. We're bringing the slides in today so it's all ready to switch over to a mouse-house until April.
Did you know a CO2 laser tube will go bad if you don't use it often enough? We didn't and found out the expensive way, so I'll be replacing the tube and power supply this weekend.
last weekend we bought 900bf of hickory that I'll be making some products to wholesale out of. All select grade stock, but it wasn't brown enough so our supplier almost gave it to us @ 25% of list. (75% off). I'm also building more inventory as we have 5 shows remaining this year. One of which is a 5 day Christmas market in 'Tosa. With all this on my weekend list it's a good thing the Packers don't play until Sunday night and the crew doesn't play until next Friday.

Wow, that was a good deal...but that is quite a stack of wood. While I couldn't care less about what happens in the NFL (any of them) I do wish the Brewers the best in the World Series. It would be cool to see Cleveland play them; but it would be cool to see Tamps Bay there as well. At least the NY and LA won''t be there.

PS, hickory is one of my favorite woods...unless I have to make something with it. It's so hard to work I've kind of given up on it.

we use a bunch of imported woods that are much harder so the only thing that I don't care for with Hickory is that it splinters when rounding over corners at the router table. I get around this by climb cutting a light skim pass first. it can be risky due to the bit grabbing the stock, but a firm grip and steady hand mitigate that.

Actually, my husband has one! I've never used it (yet 😉).
