My poor GP40 RAS

Featured Replies

I purchased this Dewalt radial arm saw a few years back. After getting it home with a lot of excitement, I quickly noticed that the carriage head (arm) was broken where it clamps. I've been looking all over the internet, ebay, craigslist etc. for replacement part with no luck at all. Can these be found?

It will be tough. The only hope is to find a compatible parts saw and salvage one. Even then, those things (the arm) are very ehavy and shipping will be a rieal bite in the butt; unless you find one nearby. I would suggest 2 things, join 2 forums, one would be Vintage Machinery, They deal with all kinds of American made machinery, and started out as woodworking tools only. But you find find someone there who has one (there is a BOYD section, that stands for Bring out your dead and it's basically a buy/sell section. They have some odd rules (like no mention of CL) so look at them. The second suggestion, which may be where you should go first is the Dewalt RAS forum. This is a much smaller forum but has some real gurus relating to the Dewalt RAS. It's on a platform that was written before the aliens built the pyramids and quite honestly is a little aggravating. The founder of the forum has passed it care on to a current member of this forum, David Walsh. He indicated he would like to update the sftware, buts there not a way to transfer the long history on information it has to a more modern platform....or at least it would be so intensive that it's almost impossible. Now, for my opinion, I think it's going to be hard to find a replacement. It may be time for your saw to become a "parts" saw and start looking for another one. I love the Dewalt saw (I've had 5) and there's still a 1030K in my shop that gets used on every project. I wish you the best with your efforts.

Well I found a guy that is willing to part one out, but his is a GP-41 not a GP-40. From what I can tell the arms are of the same casting. Anyone know if this will work. It'll cost me a bit but it's worth it to me if it'll fit.

I think (but do not know) that arm on the 41 may be a different length than the one on your saw. Dewalt made those saw with a fw different length arms, and generally the longer arms are harder to find. I would ask about the arm length and the diameter of the column if the seller is willing to provide them. If they are the same as yours I'd go for it ( I think, the cost does figure into the decision.)

PS, I have a book with some historical info on those saw (the Mr. Sawdust book) I'll check it a little later and see if there's any info in there about the 2 models. On my way out the door to a medical appt. right now, so I'll check back later.

Fred, sure do appreciate that. I sent the seller detailed images with exact measurements. He's going to check and see if everything checks out. he did mention that the brass ruler gauge on the side also went to 20 inches on his so I'm thinking they're probably the same. Not sure about the column diameter. Mine is exactly 3 inches.

Well, I checked my book and it didn't have any mention of the GP models. Getting that nfo will help, it does sound like the arms are the same length. You could use a shorter (or longer) arm with no problems, but the column diameter will have to be the same.
