Maple and Purple Heart bowl

Working on a new bowl. I cut some Purple Heart into 1/8” strips to match the kerf of the saw blade. Cut the maple diagonal and halved for the glue up. Looks like a segmented bowl, I was picturing something a little different in my mind when I glued it up.

Just wondering if you guys lay awake nights thinking this stuff up? You always come up with something interesting and I can struggle for ever and still just see a board. We'll done.

So many times, I get a chunk of wood and put it on my workbench. It just sets there as I work in the shop. Walk past it, look at it, keep on going. Then I move it to my lathe- just set's there on the ways. I walk past it, look at it, keep on going. THEN I lay awake at night thinking about what it could be. Some of those pieces are still waiting to transform into something while others tell me what they are to become. And, even then, they do not always turn out as I envisioned them at the start.

I'm with you @Rusty S I am always impressed with the works this forum.

I normally wake up a couple of times most nights. I lay there thinking about new patterns and glue ups. That is when I do my best thinking.

Another interesting piece to work on.Have not done a Ringmaster bowl in quite some time as I usually use mostly scraps for them. The past two years have not had much stimulation for creativity on lathe with move and building shop and now cleaning up some areas of the property. Hoping all that change this fall.

I just finished turning it. I still need to add sanding sealer and finish.

Looks good but definitely a display only piece with the narrow base. I want to see with finish.

You would be surprised how stable these are with the small base.

Ok I was wrong. As I tell my wife I was wrong once before. It is not maple, it is cherry and Purple Heart. Here it is with one coat of finish.

I like the way you left the straight sides to the top rim, looks good.
