May 18May 18 Popular Post In times past, you would see an early American hutch in a kitchen or a dining area. I built a hutch, with colored floating panels, for my home’s laundry area. Material· QSWO· QS hard maple – shop made· Birch cabinet grade UV plywood· Birch beadboard· Quartz countertopFinish· Transtint medium brown· Shellac· Sherwood Williams Sher-wood Kem Aqua, special blend, tinted Rebel Blue, dull rubbed· Sherwood Williams Sher-wood Kem Aqua Clear, dull rubbed Cabinet buildThe construction uses a hybrid or combination of techniques from cabinet and furniture builds. The case and adjustable shelves use QSWO and UV plywood with pocket hole joinery and dominos. The floating panels are quarter sawn from eight-quartered flat sawn maple; this method makes for a flat panel. The crown molding is constructed with using QSWO and flat sawn hard maple. The QS hard maple floating panels were made by resawing 8/4 boards on the band saw and gluing the individual pieces to make panels.I wanted “color” in the laundry area beyond painted walls, and I did not want painted cabinets. The “blue” is Sherwood Williams Sher-wood Kem Aqua, a special blend for this project, procured from their Industrial products division (it is not a paint, a pigmented clear). I have heard it be referred to as water-base lacquer. The client is happy. I have one more cabinet to make for this laundry area. Thanks for looking.Danl
