April 11Apr 11 That is beautiful Rusty. Love the embellishments; some eye catching grain on the inside too.
April 11Apr 11 Popular Post Good work . I have done rim embellishments on several platters but I really like the simple basket weave pattern you used here.

I will try to explain it with some pictures of a vase I made. The first thing you need to do is figure out the pattern for what you want to make. Then you have to size the piece to fit the pattern. Next is to put your wood on the lathe and turn it to the shape you want. Next is to turn all of the beads, for a vase you want to do that before you hollow it. It needs to be perfectly true to get good beads. Then I hollowed the vase. After I finished turning it I burn the lines, this is done with a wood burner and indexing system on the lathe. Next I can remove the tenon and finish the bottom. Now the fun starts, painting the squares. I use Faber Castell India ink pens. I color the main pattern first the finish with any fill in color. I finished this with spray lacquer.
