March 6Mar 6 Popular Post Guess we'll use the b-team subbed in off the bench again this week for @Larry Buskirk. Hope he's doing OK two weeks from anywhere. Not much happening on the West Central side of Indiana. From 3" of snow Monday to 3"+ of rain since. The early morning dense fog has given way to windy conditions with finally a few glimpses of the sun and already 74°. May venture out to the garage and have a look around this afternoon. If thats successful, I might try it again tomorrow. Church Sunday. So, what's on your weekend agenda besides getting up at 2A Sunday morning to reset your clocks to 3A? Nosey people want to know and always looking for good ideas.
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post Plan for today? To finish up using this machine..And GET all the too fat parts down to 3/4" thickness....Done did..film next trip to the shop. Have Laundry Detail right now..have swept 75% of the shop's floor..cleared a space to stash that planer, as I am done with it..Fire Pit might get fired up, later..we'll see...
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post I was able to get some minor time in the shop this past week. One thing I'm working on is a serpentine drawer sideboard, trying to copy one we have in the living room (so I can throw that one out). Anyway, I was able to do a test pressing with the vac bag system and it came out pretty good. This test was about 1/2 the thickness of the finished drawer front, and it will be made of 12 layers of 1/16" poplar, and veneered with some rift sawn cherry on each side...that is if I really get this figured out. But trying to press the entire 15 piece lamination at one time isn't possible, the press won't pull that many layers against the form I made, so I'll have to do 1/2 of it, then press the second 1/2 on. Anyway, here's my test piece. (BTW, the form I made is all MDF and must weigh 50#, it's a PITA to manage it and the stock into the vac bag.) Since I had my vac set up out I gave some time to making a couple of vacuum chucks for the lathe, and I'll use my vac bag pump on them. This is chuck #2, it's 5" and I just got it done today; when I should have been out working in the yard. Edited March 6Mar 6 by Fred W. Hargis Jr
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post Lumber has all been planed down to 3/4" thick..Shop clean-up, today...Almost done...maybe a bit more broom work? This WAS ankle deep through here...But, all the trash has ended up in here...Bandsaw to cut a few long chunks down to fire pit size..cleaned off a space to set the Planer out of the way...Currently waiting on the clothes washer to get done...working way too hard for a Friday..Stayed tuned..
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post Cleaning up after the rolling pin project. I had volunteered to do a demo for the local turning club in September. My plan was to show how to make a "Decorating Elf" and its use. Turns out another member did that several years ago, before I joined the club. Now I need to come up with something else. Have already done EWT demos, rolling pin demo/workshop, coffee scoops, and John Beaver wave bowls. Open for suggestions.Next project will be, I think, a beautician's station for the little girl next door. She is producing her first play- Steel Magnolias- and needs two for the stage. Not sure if I can make something on the lathe for that!Still waiting on the person to bring the remainder of his tape deck so I can finish checking the operation. Lots of tuner cleaner, 3-in-1 oil and spray lithium finally got all of the mechanics functioning and belts replaced.
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post Trash can is now waiting at the Fire Pit...waiting on the March Wind to die down enough...Clothes are now in the dryer...should be a lot of fun bringing that hamper upstairs...Think that will be quite enough for a Friday...
March 6Mar 6 Popular Post On this damp dreary rainy day, I'm in my shop making a Japanese Hira Kanna Smoothing Plane. 2" (52 mm) blade. Body is 2.5" wide x 10" long. It's coming along nicely but there's alot of detail to take note of in the process. Will be making a post on it down the road. Here's a test shaving I just planed! Edited March 6Mar 6 by MrRick

It’s free but you need to have software to create the images. Inkscape is a free program similar to Adobe Illustrator that can create images and save them in formats for a laser.
