Mystery Tool With Coarse Rod

Featured Replies

I'd sure like some help figuring out what the heck this is. It has a wooden handle, it appears to be made from brass, you can see the dimensions.

The collet spins off, loosening up what used to be a single rod of a coarse grit stone rod. It appears as you use it, you'd loosen the collet and let more extend out.

Close up of the coarse grit rod. It has the same makeup as a grinding wheel.

In hand for size context.

Is it a tool to dress an abrasive wheel?

Burnisher

Ron nailed it. I've got one just like it. I'll try to remember to take a picture of it tomorrow.

So what kind of wheel or tool does it dress?

I will let Dave chime in but I have a “home grown” one that I dress my bench grinder wheel. The fancier versions have a diamond.

@Ron Dudelston , I marked you as the "Solver". A feature we are going to use, pretty cool eh?

As Ron said, I've only used it to dress my bench grinder stones which are mainly Aluminum Oxide. Works well for quick touch up. I do have a diamond dresser I use when I've contaminated (loaded) the wheels mainly with non-ferrous material.

I've had mine for years. IIRC it was given to me by a welding supply salesman as a trial tool

Thanks Gramps!

So I looked where I was sure it was at but I guess I wasn't that sure after all. Apparently, I've put it someplace I wouldn't forget but obviously that plan failed miserably.

On a positive note, my wheel type dresser is located by the grinder and my diamond dresser is still in my sharpening tool kit.

Now you've got me wondering where I hid it from myself. I'll resume the search sometime in June when it's warmer. Of course that fully depends what else I'll be trying to find.

FWIW, last summer I emptied the garage, traveled to Menards and installed all new racks and shelves and built a nice new bench. Everything got “sorted” and put in clear Costco tubs. A few weeks ago I needed some pipe thread dope and I could not find it. A sad state of cleanliness.

I still can't find a new, in package idler pulley for my mower I had in my hand the fall of 2023 and before my first surgery in September 2024. I remember thinking at the time, I'm going to put it in a logical place where I can find it. I've spent hours hunting for it. I finally just ordered another one. I hope I can find that one next spring🤔

Oh ya, you'll find it for sure! It'll be sitting in plain daylight on a shelf, right where you left it in an obvious location so you'd not forget where put it.

Yesterday looked for something in the category it was in in the old shop. Well you know the rest of the story and now I cannot even remember what I was looking for . Mmmmm maybe I did not need that at all.
