Celtic knot W/ inlay

Featured Replies

to start you need two blanks of contrasting colors that are as close to square as you can get them, lay them out end to end and number the side of both from 1 to 4, rotating blanks the same direction, cut the blanks, I use 30 deg., then glue the top of one blank to the bottom of the other blank, you have to do both, when glue has set rotate blanks to side 2 and cut again this time glueing top of one to corresponding bottom, make sure to keep numbered sides together, after glue sets again cut blanks this time on side 3 and repeat process of glueing opposite ends, you should be starting to see your inlays appear, on the fourth cut the pattern becomes apparent and depending on how much attention to detail, which side of the bed you got up on and what you had for breakfast you've got a perfect knot. almost forgot it helps a lot to make a glueing jig out of old counter top to help line everything up. pictures to follow in next comment. questions or comments are welcome and thanks for looking Rusty S.

Fixed!!

Now I see how you did it! Really neat idea.

Your intersections of the inlays line up perfectly! Is the thickness of the inlays the same as the amount of material removed by the saw kerf?

Yes ,as close as is possible.  Wish I could take credit for this idea but I got it from another forum long enough ago  as to not remember  where🤔

And thank you for fixing  my problem

Rusty, do you have any photos of turning in process and finished.

  • Author

unfortunately no pictures other than the ones in an earlier post but as soon as i can i will get others and post here. a[so as others can attest to the possibilities with Celtic knots are almost as endless as your imagination and the turning process is very straight forward once finished with the glue up chuck up your blank and turn a round shape, try to pay attention to keeping the x centered but don't obsess over it, all good things come with practice, then watch the magic as the cross appears😀
