December 19, 2025Dec 19 Popular Post Daughter has a cook book stand on her Christmas list. So I walked out to the old shop and found a scrap piece of Claro Walnut left over from one of my rocker builds. I'm winging it. You'll know what it's going to look like when I know. I resawed a 6/4 board and glued it up for the back of the stand. It's not much right now, like I said, it'll develop as I go. 😃 The edges are joined with a low angle jack. Should have an invisible glue joint.

December 19, 2025Dec 19 Popular Post I have a GSD too. She's more likely to enjoy sitting in the doorway looking out for squirrels, but does join me in the shop too. My prior GSD was very much my sidekick and had a bed under my miter saw table.
December 19, 2025Dec 19 I'll be interested to see what you come up with, Marie uses a clear plastic one (cook book stand) that really isn't all that nice. But shouldn't you be packing for "THE MOVE"?
December 19, 2025Dec 19 Popular Post Not to get in the way of your process, but this might be a consideration - design by DIY Montreal (https://youtu.be/duP5HKs4APo). Hers is actually a cutting board that could transition into a cookbook or iPad stand (that project is at around the 14 minute mark in the video). I made a couple smaller versions that I use for my cell phone when viewing videos. I did glueups to create the slots. Nice part is that it can be stored away flat.
December 19, 2025Dec 19 Popular Post I recommend bringing in a recipe book to help inspire and verify that your idea works. 4D

January 3Jan 3 Author Popular Post I had a fun time with this little book stand. I used 3/4" thick Claro for the main body of the stand and for the shelf support I thickness planed down to 1/2", and for the edge front book stop with the Ebony pegs I planed down to 1/4". I like mixing thicknesses so it's not all 3/4" and bulky looking, I wanted this to have an elegance to it. I routed a 1/2" slot into the book matched board of the book stand to except the adjustable support/leg. I made it a perfect tight fit as you can see, knowing that by the time I sanded through the grits from 120 to 800 it'd be close to a great sliding fit. I used a 1/4" round over bit to hit the side edges to fit the slot ends perfectly. I cut the pegs into 3/16" square, then sanded them round on some 80 grit paper by hand. I have had experience using dowel makers and hammering square ebony pegs through a hole in steel to try to create small dowel pegs, but this species is pretty brittle, and it fractures and breaks. So I learned it's best to rip it down on my bandsaw then create a round dowel by hand. The dowels were glued and flush cut. I flush cut from both sides, I have flush cut from one side in the past and sometimes I end up breaking the dowel off too early and the broken piece pulls out a splinter from the plugged hole leaving an unsightly hole. Sanding through the grits to 800 burnishes the wood to the point of a sheen, bringing out the grain of the Claro before finishing. I like Tried and True, 3 applications in three days, they want #0000 steel wool between applications, I did not, since I took the sanding to 800 to begin with it didn't matter. Then buffed out the stand with wax and wrapped it up for under the Christmas tree and she loved it. Here it is in its happy home with my daughter. Front Back It was fun getting in the shop, since I rarely do these days, I could feel some awkwardness making this project since I have not had a lot of shop time in the last couple years, just kind of fumbling around and along, so it was a good warm up piece to make. Thanks for looking!
January 3Jan 3 Turned out awesome John. Thanks sharing the project. Glad you got to be in the shop again.
January 3Jan 3 Popular Post This turned out great! Love the wood selection and all the details (like the dowels). What are the general dimensions?

I had in mind a design like yours, and after seeing yours posted here it gave me confidence it would work, so thanks for sharing! If I remember right, I think it was 9" wide by 12" tall, I think.
