House Numbers

My current project; house numbers. Each number is approximately 7 x 10" with the overall width of the board 30". My saw is a 22" Hegner, so I had to come up with a method to cut all the fancy fretwork with what I have. My solution is to use spiral blades ( 2/0 ) to cut the outside of the numbers and then use flat blades to cut the inside frets. Once I have the fretwork cut I'll stain the number for more contrast, then glue the numbers back into the board with polyurethane glue and add a backer painted white.

∆∆∆ What Fred said Wich ∆∆∆

Those look laser cut perfection. The fretwork will add an interesting dimension. Definitely following along.

Oh trust me, these are nowhere near laser perfection. I'm using this as a skill building exercise ( spiral blades ) for other projects that are oversize. :)

Progress! All the numbers and frets are cut. Now, on to the staining. I need a darker stain for contrast. I will test with Minwax dark walnut to start.

The contrasting stain applied. I have the opportunity to backlight the project using the transom window above the front door and installing a light behind it. I will need to enlarge the kerf around the numbers using a larger spiral blade then when I first cut the numbers.

I like that idea. It would be really cool.

Backlighting it will really set it off.

I didn't like the look of the big hole in the number six, so I glued the oval back in. The glue is drying and I'm waiting on the larger spiral blades. . .

Here is the panel installed. I got the paint removed from the outside of the glass, but I need at least one more go round on the inside of the glass, then a light wash with white craft paint. I'll see if I can get a picture of the number after dark tonight.

Very steady hand using the spiral blade.  The curves on the numbers are, in my eyes, are perfect.

The finished project is great.
Job well done.
