I've written the story and posted his request sketch on my blog here: https://4dfurniture.blogspot.com/2022/07/a-simple-landscape-model-stand.html At the time all landscape architecture students made layer stacked cardboard site models of their proposed designs to present. Much of that is now replaced by computer renderings and 3D printed versions. This stand was so they could stand their models up for better inspection by seated guests at their critiques. A class worth of projects could be up on display around the perimeter of a crit room.

Lights I ordered showed up today. Probably not the best solution, but they do throw light, and have 3 levels of brightness to choose from. Obviously brighter the closer to the light source. Not sure anyone makes one that would project the light more evenly across the art. Perhaps I need to invent a wedged filter to slip over the light. Thicker, letting less though at the top and thinner at the bottom letting the most light out. Hmmm. 4D
February 16, 20251 yr Author Glamor shot. Waiting for a warmer day to put a finish on the parts. I've got a spare hinge, and several spare bolts for the legs. Thinking about making one from walnut If I can find a local source for a 1x6 x 8' walnut board. 4D
March 2, 20251 yr Author Been contemplating a way to make sure the shelf doesn't slip off unless you want it to. Found some 3/8" diameter rare earth magnets with a hole for a screw in them. Ordered some 3/8" x 3" steel rods to replace the aluminum rods. Magnets arrived and playing with one I think if I screw one down in the bottom of each hole the steel post will take a pretty good tug to remove when stuck to them. Simplest idea I could come up with. The mahogany stand legs have some internal stress and want to twist the stand. With the shelf held snug against it the metal rods keep the legs aligned. Resist the twist. 4D
March 8, 20251 yr Author Finally had a chance to stain and finish the easel. Also added magnets and steel rods so the shelf would stay snuggly connected but still be removeable. Cherry stain. Two coats of Minwax Polycrylic on top. Light appears to wash out the color of the front leg but in person the color is consistent on all parts. 4D Edited March 8, 20251 yr by 4DThinker
