So tye problem was a need for many. Now the problem  I’m having with Menards is the metal isn’t consistent ...

Different suppliers provided with loose tolerances. Good off-shelf project metal, but for large scale projects like yours a local metal supplier might be a solution.

I like the aluminum Menards carries and I only but a few pieces at a time. Not cheap, about $12  and I think iai get abut 8 pieces

I got lucky and east able to get 1000 compression springs on Ebay for around $10.

I picked up some aluminum bar from onlinemetals.com before you started this thread - just based on the pictures I saw in another post.  I don't need the smashing power of Wetzlers all the time.

 

Do you have any trouble with the steel spring pins denting the aluminum bar?  Assuming there are spring pins in the sliding jaw as well as the upper fixed jaw of course.

No… just make sure you add enough room for the metal.
