Zack Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 A friend of mine gave me a pickup truck load of wood. He was helping his neighbor clean out his shed, the wood was in there when he had bought the property in the mid 80’s. Looks like it was salvaged from shipping crates and boxes from overseas. Some of it looks like mahoganythe rest of it I can’t identify. See if yall have any ideas. Grandpadave52, lew and Fred W. Hargis Jr 3 Quote
Zack Posted January 31 Author Report Posted January 31 If anyone has any ideas as to the species I’d like to know. I haven’t been able to identify them. Grandpadave52 1 Quote
HandyDan Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 A guy I worked with gave me some wood from the walls of his basement. His dad worked for one of the tire manufacturers in Akron , Ohio and brought home slats off of wood pallets the rubber came in on. He said he dad referred to it as African Mahogany. Your wood looks very similar. Google it in images and you will see the similarity and the grain variations of it too. Zack, Grandpadave52, DuckSoup and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 I would agree some of it looks like mahogany, but it's always hard to ID wood from pictures. DuckSoup, Grandpadave52, Headhunter and 1 other 4 Quote
difalkner Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 Looks like Luan to me. African Mahogany is a better grade of Luan although African Mahogany isn't technically a true Mahogany. Luan is the cheaper version, if that helps. Fred W. Hargis Jr, HARO50, DuckSoup and 1 other 4 Quote
HARO50 Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 Is this solid lumber or plywood? Grandpadave52 1 Quote
Zack Posted January 31 Author Report Posted January 31 (edited) It’s not plywood. They’re all solid wood planks of varying widths and thickness. Rough cut for the most part, screw and nail holes makes me think they were old shipping crates. There’s at least 7 different species. Edited January 31 by Zack HARO50, Grandpadave52 and Fred W. Ron Dudelston Posted February 1 Report Posted February 1 It has the appearance of a species of mahogany. Either African or Honduran. Grandpadave52, HARO50 and Fred W. Hargis Jr 3 Quote
HARO50 Posted February 1 Report Posted February 1 (edited) Lauan (or luan), also known as meranti, is seldom seen in the form of lumber these days, but is usually imported as plywood. But if these boards are indeed from the 80's, they may very well be lauan. Edited February 1 by HARO50 Fred W. Hargis Jr and Grandpadave52 2 Quote
Zack Posted February 1 Author Report Posted February 1 Thanks. Those aren’t in the wood database I have, I’ll do some research. HARO50, Grandpadave52 and Fred W. Hargis Jr 3 Quote
ASteinfield Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 Very hard to ID. What are you planning to do with it? Grandpadave52 1 Quote
Popular Post Zack Posted February 5 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 5 Nothing in particular. I’ve made a few small projects, couple of marking gauges, shaving stand, chisel rack, try square, etc. Also made the frames for the doors on my shed with some of it. Some of it is hard and dense others are very light and fibery. I’d just like to know what they are more out of curiosity than anything. I haven’t found anyone that can i.d. It yet.
