Chair repair and table refinish

Featured Replies

I have a question about a chair rung and how to repair and replace it without taking the entire chair apart.

I have a bottom rung that a puppy long ago teethed on.

If I cut this in half and order a replacement from the vendor can I Split the new spingle  in the middle then cut in a slot that when install acts as a spreader from the piece and when sanded should become invisible.

A bs kerf should be small enough to make it almost invisible then can I insert a key that both pushes the ends into to sockets and acts as a center feature or when properly shaped then sanded should make it invisible.

Also I am going to refinish the piece and again hopefully the furniture manufacturer can be located and the dye/stain can be purchased.

Depending on the tenon lengths on the new rung, there might be enough flex in the remaining assembly that it might snap into place

Another option is to shorten the tenon on both ends insert one side and then slide the rung back to the other end so 1/2 of tenon is on both sides.

Keith can show you what not to do.

Red Green:  duct tape, duh......

as i noted in the other thread, it's failed, you fix it back to the way it was before it failed....it's going to fail again, you haven't changed anything.

I would suggest that you not cut the existing one in half as that will make a weaker spot.  There may be extenuating circumstances that make getting the existing joints apart, but that would be my first choice.
