Could have sworn I started this a while back....oh well..

Seems I was getting tired of getting poked with chisels, while reaching for a plane....

And this rack was a bit too long..

To be swinging on just that single hinge...time for something different to be made....

 

So...this will get a make over....went out and bought a few thin planks of KIWI Pine...

Clamped this flat for a few days...KIWI Pine?

Next item...was to work on that old rack a bit...

Set this aside for a day....and figure out where to make a few cuts...

Had too many slots, anyway...only needed 11....Mitersaw next..

Racks were a bit too thick...resaw one side a bit, trying to avoid all them screws..

Once these were removed, I could remove the counter bored strip, and a matching strip from  the other edge..

The face I did not resaw, needed leveled a bit

Test fitted a few of the larger Mortise Chisels..

Square is showing where I needed to trim this rack for length, as there was one too many slots...the narrow chisels?

Seem to be flopping around in the slots....we have ways..

1/2" forstner bit...just enough for the chisel's bolsters to fit in.   with come back later with a countersink bit, to accommodate the socket chisels...

Problem...as this will be attached to the back of a case, and NOT swing out, needed a way to reach into the case and pull a chisel straight out, which is why those slots were opened up

But, how to keep the chisels in place?

A Hinged "keeper" should do the trick...

so..

Racks are almost done...Need to build a box/case to hold them.

Cool idea with the Forstner bit recess.

I have a similar chisel rack mounted to the wall. I bored the holes for the ferrules all the way through behind the narrower slots so they can’t fall out of the rack. Just lift them up a little to get them out.

4 corners...of the case...through dovetails at each corner...

Tools?

Lay out work needs these...

 

Then, sit on the shop stool for a little bit...

Run the handsaw for a bit..

Clamp this to a "chopping block.."

Marking knife ( Hi-Tech one, at that) to scribe the Base line...

This is the "outside" face....I chop about halfway down...leave a small tab for support...flip this over...

That first pass on the other face prevents any blow outs when I chop the waste out from the Inside face...needs a bit of clean up to remove the crumbs..then stand this up on the Tail Board...make sure the "Inside Faces" match up..

No. 2 pencil with a needle sharp point, trace around each pin...

Mark where the waste is...and..

I bandsaw out the waste, as I can SEE where the lines are, and cut on the waste side of them,,,leaving the lines...

Question now is, will this fit right off the saw?

Almost..maybe a couple more taps with the Mallet?

I think that will do...for a dry fit?

Repeat these steps for the rest of the 4 corners..

So...need to work on a solid wood back and a solid wood door...might involve a couple glue ups?

Sunday in the Shop...then it was closed on Monday...Yesterday?

Made some sawdust...

Cross cutting and ripping going on...to get 4 parts ready to glue up...Used a plane to refine the rougher edges..

Millers Falls No. 8, Type 2....which left a mess on the floor, of course..

All so I could glue up a panel for the back of the case...

Will be the Back Panel of the case...to which this rack will be attached to..

 

 

So..the next time I happen to wander down to the shop....

These 2 will get cobble up into a Door for the case...

Love that Millers Falls plane! I have a #14 set up as a roughing foreplane.

..Up-date time....Case has a back on it...

Glued in place.. Door has been glued up as a 4 piece panel...

Center 2 strips are a tad longer, intend to cut a small curve, for the top of the door...

Let these sit a day or so...

 

Was in a big hurry for some odd reason...never glued those dovetails,,,,,they need a hammer to go together, anyway....then glue the back panel into place locked that edge up...as for the front edges of the corners?

Each corner now has a corner Bracket...and a start to adding some hinges to the door....door already has it curvy detail done..

Hinges are now installed...

And a Latch has been added, as well...

bench was a bit messy, today..

But, mainly these tools were needed...

M-F No. 8 was needed to plane a few edges flush,,mainly the back panel had a 1/4" overhang...Handsaws to adjust the fit of the racks, knife and chisel to let in the corner brackets so the door will close.   Drill for pilot holes...1/16" bit. 

 

Inside rack....

Slots needed adjusted for a better fit of a couple chisels.  Rack was glued and screwed in place...

Countersunk screws through the back panel.   There is a "Keeper"   a "bar" that is hinged on one end....and for right now, is secured with a single screw ( to be replaced with a threaded insert and a thumbscrew..later

 

 

As for the other chisel rack....2 tries to get the rack screwed to the door at the correct height,,,first one was about an inch too high....

Had to adjust the fit of 2 slots...as for the 2 rows of counter sunk holes...

That is a Brass plate....intend to add a name plate etch or decal to it,  after a finish has been added...

Swept the shop floor, and called it a day.    even had a Lunch Break, today....

Ooh, fancy chisel storage. Great job matching the grain patterns on the door. Tomorrow being Monday, a national holiday and presidential inauguration day, you can have the day off. Post office and banks will be closed anyways.

Both racks now have a "rest" for the ends of the chisels

I made a "Thunbscrew" out of a he head bolt.   Drilled and tapped a hole for the bolt to secure the Keeper..

As for the Front Door?

Never fear, that white glue line will soon disappear..

 

As for where this will be going?

I cleared off a space on the end of the Tool Cabinet...Electrical Cords were re-hung..and...

A few tools got re-located.  (L-R)..Compass Saw...6" Drawknife...8" Drawknife...Goodell Pratt No. 477 Breast Drill...

 

Need to fix a couple spots, let the shop warm up so I can brush on a coat of varnish...and then maybe hang the Case up..

Good start to the new year

Up-date time, again...needed to get this off of the bench...once the varnish was fully dry...

Not the prettiest gal, but...where it will be going, it should fit right in..

2 screws to install....eye-balled for level...open the door of the case..

had to add a "rest/stop" for the BIG chisel...otherwise it will hang down too far...Next test..

 

I opened the door to the Tool Cabinet, and let it swing open to 90 degrees...

To make sure I have enough clearance....then close things up..

Shop is a tad "messy"....I think maybe add another Backsaw?
