I have a question for you all. I am in the planning stages of building a music stand, I like the simplicity of this Maloof stand. One of the design areas I'd like to use is the arm and sheet/book music support part of the design. I can't see how the arm is staying in place, could it be as simple as gravity?

The weight of the left side of the arm is heavier than the right side, so it's pinching on the vertical post as it rests? There isn't any obvious screw handle or clamping mechanism holding the horizontal assembly up and in place. I am assuming the height is adjustable? Thanks for any opinions on this.

I believe the music support can be adjusted, raised or lowered, with the aid of the peg near the bottom of the the stand.  I am not certain if it swivels at the top of the vertical piece.  Danl

I found this pic.  Not certain why there are holes or ebony plugs along the top.

Judging from this article and the picture of the Maloof double music rack

I think the horizontal beam is fixed. The height adjustment is on the base where the vertical pole can be raised or lowered. My guess is the counter balance weight, on the cross arm, is to keep the tripod stand from tipping over if a heavy music book would be placed on the stand.

Hey Dan, thanks for solving the mystery of the height adjustment. Also, I'm not sure if those are plugs or holes? Could they be holes for side to side adjustment?

Lew, thanks a million, the counter balance makes complete sense, I had not even thought of that.

I do not think they are holes to be used for side adjustment because then the music sheet holder would be further from the pivot point.

Perhaps metallic weight is added to the arm to better counter the music sheet holder.   Danl

That is what I was thinking also. Weights

Not a musician by any stretch, but could the "holes" be for storing extra mouthpieces like for a clarinet or saxophone? Just a SWAG?

  • I don't know, really hard to tell from here...but it sure looks like something that Maloof fella would make. Interesting.
