Veneer Question?

Someone local to me has a Hickory veneer roll, 3 3/8" x 250', from a product line called "Proflex" that require the veneer and a substrate. See the Marketplace listing here. My questions are as follows:

 

1. Is it possible to "re-hydrate" this roll, as suggested?

2. Can something like this be easily cut down into narrower strips? (for example, for use on a bookshelf)

3. Is this a fair price and should I consider it?

Funny you should mention, the age I see on the ad.

I had some very old veneer rolls that I couldn't give away and I finally tossed em last year. The rolls I had were maple and oak, 1 to 2 inches wide, and they were just as good as the day they were bought, I unrolled them a few feet out and they were completely usable, I know they were well over 20 years old.

I've used some very curled veneered sheets, and sprayed them with a glycerine/water mix and then clamped them flat in a veneer press. they came out fine and i was able to use them without problem.  The only question I would have about those strips is whether they are pre-glued. the ones with hot melt glue on them may be a little harder to deal with (just speculation on my part). While "re-hydrating" may be tough with long strips like that, it does work, I did it to get out the wrinkles in my sheets (see pic, it's the bubinga in the center).

According to the add, I don't think they are pre-glued. Any advice on questions 2 & 3?

Well, it can be cut down into thinner strips. I'm not sure how easy it will be. Trying to cut veneer with something like a utility knife can be tricky, the knife sometimes tries to follow the grain of the wood. Doing it with a veneer saw would be a slow way to do. I suspect you could dream up a jig to hold the veneer in position as well as a knife and do fairly well. As for the price, no idea. Consider this, if you cut that into 1" strips (successfully) you'd have 750' of edging....that is one awful lot of edgebanding material.

Depending on the length you need, an "Old School" paper cutter works great for cutting veneer.

As to the price, seems a bit high to me.
