August 29, 20241 yr Popular Post I’d like to say that I haven’t had a chance to clean up but it always seems to be in some sort of disarray. I made sure everything is on wheels as I’m still working on the layout.

I think Gordon cheated, and vacuumed the place before he took the picture. BTW, welcome to the Patriot Woodworker, Gordon. Has anyone told you about the donuts yet? I didn’t run a vacuum but after the last bowl I did use a snow shovel to remove the shavings.
August 30, 20241 yr Popular Post Really nice digs Gordon. Great use of space. Great add on too for outside cover. I have a few questions; Looks like your shop is what is called down here a "Portable Garage" e.g. built on runners, moved to site? Did you purchase or build on-site? 12' or 14' wide? 16', 20' or 24' long? Runners 4x4 or 4x6? Floor joists 2x4, 2x6? 12" or 16" OC Wall height, 7', 7-1/2' or 8'? Wall stud spacing, 16", 24" OC? 2x4, 2x6? Guessing you've run 60a or 100a electrical service to it? Assume you insulated the walls / ceiling? Any floor insulation? Heating / cooling system? Space heater, window A/C, mini-split? Interior walls painted OSB, Plywood, Drywall? OK, interrogation over. I ask because I'm strongly considering something similar within the next 12-24 months. Still need to work on site and site prep. Thanks for considering my nose problem and especially sharing your shop pictures. BTW, the break room is conveniently located next to my office.
August 30, 20241 yr Popular Post Grandpadave, you forgot to ask him his blood type and astrological sign. 😀 Welcome Gordon. And I have one question.......what's a snow shovel?

I have a few questions; Looks like your shop is what is called down here a "Portable Garage" e.g. built on runners, moved to site? Did you purchase or build on-site? Yes, it’s built on runners. I didn’t build it, had it delivered. In a perfect world and unlimited funds I would have preferred a concrete floor. I did add the lean to and finished the inside. 12' or 14' wide? 16', 20' or 24' long? It’s 12’ x 21’. If you’re planning to start from scratch, my advice would be to go as big as your budget and space will allow. I don’t think anyone has ever said gee I wish I had built a smaller shop. 😂 Runners 4x4 or 4x6? 4 x 4 Floor joists 2x4, 2x6? 12" or 16" OC The runners are the floor joists Wall height, 7', 7-1/2' or 8'? 8 wall, Wall stud spacing, 16", 24" OC? 2x4, 2x6? 16” OC 2 x4 Guessing you've run 60a or 100a electrical service to it? 60a which was a huge mistake. I didn’t take into account future equipment needs. Assume you insulated the walls / ceiling? Any floor insulation? Yes, 4” in the walls, 6” in the ceiling. I didn’t insulate the floor Heating / cooling system? Space heater, window A/C, mini-split? I mounted this 5000 w space heater in the rear corner on the ceiling. I also have an air filter mounted in the middle that circulates the air. Between the two I was quite comfortable even in the dead of winter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009F1SWH8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 At 20 degrees outside it takes about an hour to heat up to comfortable temperature Interior walls painted OSB, Plywood, Drywall? Painted OSB OK, interrogation over. I ask because I'm strongly considering something similar within the next 12-24 months. Still need to work on site and site prep. August 30, 20241 yr Popular Post Thanks @Gordonfor answering my questions and posting additional pictures. All very helpful. Agree, a concrete floor would be more desirable but 50+ years working on concrete has taken its toll on me. Additional cost, zoning requirements (even in rural Indiana), permits, insurance and property taxes add to the cost of a permanent versus "portable" structure. Back surgery 3 years ago set me back (no pun intended) on my plans. Again, thanks for giving your time and expertise.

Good luck with your new shop, I can also add that ordering a pre build garage sped things up tremendously as it’s hard to find a builder up here that was able to start right away.
