So, we started planting the plants we purchased over the last 6 weeks, 53 total and 20 phlox plants in a 6'x30 area. We still have a 6'x15' area behind the house that needs to be planted once we decide what will work in partial sun. The spacing should allow for room to grow next spring. Clusters of daffodils, tulips, gladiolas and the like will fill in throughout. I may have over ordered on the bulbs, but we will see. Bulbs ship starting September 5 till the first week of October & we will mulch after that.

LOML says "Nice selection! Remember to water well until they're established." She worked at a garden center for about 25 years, and just CAN'T let go!

Squirrels love bulbs...

I had read that a few months back, so I have set up a small feeding station near my shed and I've been feeding them unsalted peanuts in the shell. I hope to get them hooked on those because they're a lot cheaper than bulbs.

Daffodil bulbs tend to repel the bushy-tailed rats. Blood meal worked into the soil abound bulbs is often effective, and a 3/4" to 1" mesh placed above the bulbs will let them grow through and flower, while making it harder for squirrels to dig them out. But if you see the little buggers coming in with a backhoe, I would definitely shoot them! :PullingHair:

:ChinScratch: That reminds me I've got to go water our "Weed Sanctuary". ;)

Be careful of those squirrels, around here they shoot back. :P

Those little round copper balls seem to repel them.

Okay, we put this project to sleep. The picture shows an area about 6x55' & around back another 6x17'. There are 118 plants above ground and every white pickets marks a location of 5 bulbs, the bottom area is lined with crocus the entire length. Total plants and bulbs about 550.  If 50% of these bloom come spring, we will be really happy.
