June 13, 20242 yr Popular Post Ok, This is a mess.. And so is this.. Broom is needed.. Both here, and the work area.. Fancy planes have to be put away.. And closed up to stay clean.. As for that Messy Bench? "Clear For Action!" Take a good look, as it won't stay like this very long.. Pine that is available right now? Needs a Project?...Maybe build a case for... With this as a "Tool Kit"? Very Interesting Maybe I can get two people to try to get this.. Up to the Fire Pit? Yeah, right... Will leave these for later.. Panels to make bottoms for Cases... Stay tuned...
June 14, 20242 yr I'm here. Take it easy though. Gonna be hot. A pine project by July 4th is good. I need the break.
June 14, 20242 yr Author Popular Post More of this, today.. More saw dust made...resaw 2 more planks...first one wasn't too bad...second one.... Saw decided to drift off a bit..stopped it there, rotated to the other end, and finished the cut. Needed cleaned up a bit.. Millers Falls No. 15 seemed to do the trick...then smooth things out.. With the Stanley No. 4-1/2 c, Type 11...did three boards..and made a mess on the floor.. Decided to try to get the long sides the same length, for now... Stack them up on the Mitre Box...and.. And cut off the excess... I thought maybe IF I cut the one plank in half... That it could make the ends of the case... While the long sides were ok..the ends were too short, forgot to allow for the "Horn" on the handle..we have more to resaw..will save the 2 "shorties" for a case for the Stanley No. 66.. A plane with a "c" in it's name? "Groovy"! Stay tuned...
June 15, 20242 yr Author Popular Post More "Adventures" this morning.. New blank was resawn .. Leveled.. Then this one and another were marked for the CORRECT length this time, and the mitre box made the cut...Then tablesaw to rip all 4 parts to width... And all 4 were planed to match each other a bit better, without the saw marks Laid out a few tools for this morning's Adventures.. Marking gauge? Stanley No. 65 SW...had some work to do.. Set the cutter to the thickness of the long sides...and mark a baseline... That chisel was also a "Marking Gauge".. It set the spacings for the fingers, small combo square carried the lines over..all set for the saw... Then on the "Show Face", I chopped down about 1/2 way..then flipped this over.. And finish the chopping out...use these "fingers", I traced out the matching fingers for the other half of the corner joint. Then repeat the Layout, the saw work, and then the chisel work...and then a dry fit.. And checked the corner for square.. Looks good to me....1 done, only 3 more to do... Stay tuned... BTW, Shop now has a Box Fan....should help things out a bit..
June 15, 20242 yr Author Popular Post I think this should do the trick.. I also got all but the last corner done... Will save that for tomorrow...

June 20, 20242 yr Author Start of corner #4 25 minutes later.. Corner #4 is done....try all 4 corners in a dry fit. . cut up a batch of cauls.. the 2 long ones have a special job to do..they are friction fit for the center of the box..so that when the clamps start in, the long sides will NOT bow in.. So..clamps and cauls.. And a diagonal clamp to pull things into square..checked both ends, too let this sit over night... Stay tuned..
June 20, 20242 yr Author Popular Post It is now out of the clamps...corners have been cleaned up where needed.. End view.. Front or back? We'll see.. Check that the plane does fit.. Seems to fit just right. Have just now ripped a large batch of "Slips"..will start installing tomorrow... Had an issue loading one photo... Edited June 20, 20242 yr by steven newman
June 21, 20242 yr Author Popular Post "Is my slip showing?" These strips, are also known as Slips.. Hopefully, the grain matches....these will get mitered on the ends, and then glued in place.. Cordless Mitersaw? Then mark for length, and miter the other end..plywood is there to keep the saw's teeth from sawing into the metal Gib... And still allow me to cut all the way through a part.. A cleaner cut this way.. then work my way around the edge of the box..with glue and clamps Then flip this mess over.. And repeat. Plan is to let this sit a day...then mark where to cut the frame for the lid at.. Using this handsaw...then I can cut, fit and glue plywood panels..one for the bottom of the box, and one for the lid.. Stay tuned..
June 23, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Time to up date this mess.. Clamp were removed...edges leveled up.... A bead was milled all the way around...once I decided what was to be the "Top"... That way...a backsaw had something to follow.. Cutting corners first... Once those were connected...then the longer sides were sawn.. Then use the lid and the box to trace out a plywood panel...cut 2 panels..and glue and caul and clamp the panels in place.. Lid....and.. Box has a bottom! Let these 2 sit a day...then knock the cauls out...some come easy..some wanted to fight being evicted....so.. They were re-installed as blocking...so that this plane won't rattle around in the box... A lot of sand and plane work followed, until the lid and the top of the box matched up..and hinges could be installed.. Then flip over.. And install a latch....had to go to the store and buy some new brushes....one for the Witch's Brew and a one or 2 for the Amber Shellac...both of which will go on later today.. Stay tuned
June 23, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Witch's Brew has been brushed on, and wiped down.. Then a coat of Amber Shellac was brushed on, allowed to cure a while, then rubbed down with.. Steel wool... And call it good enough...maybe do a branding iron later...just that I need that space on my bench... Wir haben zu arbeiten....
