Pet Resistant Sliding Screen Door

Got a question for y'all. I'm on my 6 or 7th sliding screen door since we bought our home in 2001. They have all been replacements from the typical Lowes or HD store, I even bought the "heavy duty" ones and they all fail after a couple years or less, the wheels lose their resistance in the spring mechanism and end up going up into the door too much, and eventually the slider is sliding metal to metal on the track. Or the wheels themselves wear out, or the screen gets trashed by pets.

I have today surfed the net and seen many "heavy duty pet resistant sliding screen doors" but they don't seem that heavy duty to me once I see the specs.

Does anyone have any good experiences with these sliders? And if so, what brand did you purchase? Thanks

I've replaced the screening and some parts like the wheels in them a couple of time, but never the whole door. Sounds like you need one anyway, do the HD models cost much more than a standard one?

Thanks Fred, the heavy duty models average about 100 to 150 more, so around 200 to 250. But when I look at the "HD" models, they don't look any more heavy duty than the ones right off the shelf at the big box stores.

Going off of Freds comments, I may just purchase new wheels and install a pet resistant screen, the frame is actually ok. I've wanted to install the heavy duty half shield mesh steel that can be screwed onto the screens lower third, I did try that and the weight of it was too much for the wheels and the door dragged on the track.

So I'll see if I can find heavy duty replacement wheels, and just replace the screen with heavy duty pet screen.

Our screen doors are called "security" screens. Really heavy duty. Ours are hinged but, maybe you could find sliding security screens.

I just Googled it and there is co. in Tucson that manufactures a sliding security door. So, I'm guessing there's a co. in or near your area.

I just googled and saw a few retailers near us, starting at 1000 bucks on up, I'll just get rid of our dogs

Holy crap! 1K for a security screen door? Thank goodness ours were installed by our home's previous owner. In fact, he had them installed on all the windows, too. Talk about paranoid. Those had to be removed to allow for new vinyl windows.

I have not had a issue with the wheels, but when ever I needed a door rescreened, I always took it to ACE Hardware.  They did a better job than I could do.   Danl

Thanks all, so I went out and purchased new wheels, and a I re-screened the door. At HD they have Pet Screen. It's a thicker heavier mesh, not metal or cloth, it's hard to explain what it is, but it's pretty good stuff. With my spline tool and a razor knife had it done in about 10 minutes.
