This will be my next carving project. Photographed panel from the door on the Church of the Purgatories in Madera, Italy. I'll be carving this in 2-3 pieces and doing something different for the finish(es).

I'm thinking a mixture of black, white, gold, silver.

Project underway. There will be some lathe work done and then onto the actual carving.

I'm learning here. I honestly would not guessed to begin in this fashion.

You're off to a great start Frederick.  And thanks for including the pic in pic, it's easier to see what you are working towards than having to scroll up or back to the beginning of the thread to look at the inspiration pic and then scroll back to your latest post to see the work along the way.  Inadvertent or not, I appreciate it!

Now, for the carving of the rosette.

Great looking progress.

Carving almost ready! Just a little sanding , some touchups and it will be ready for finishing. I'm also showing the surround moulding that I've made for the the plaque. This was made with my Stanley 55 molding plane and a couple of wooden beading planes.

Incredible. Love the molding and especially the fact it's made "old school." Beautiful ribbon coming off that 55.

Moulding didn't fit up as expected due to the difficulty of using the Stanley 55 but it's acceptable. I've decided to paint this in a darkish gray with a gilded center. If you remember that panel that I carved from Bilbao, it was off-white and that worked well. IMO. This shows the first of two shellac seal coats that I'll do. These will be lightly sanded down before the painting is done.

Thanks. I can't really say about the time because I work an hour here, two there, etc.
