February 5, 20242 yr Popular Post Ahh, the good ol' days. Sometimes you have to wonder how mankind (is it person-kind now?) survived at all.

February 5, 20242 yr Popular Post But I don't recall ever needing told, "do not eat laundry soap pods". Somehow we just knew that was stupid.

In the mid to late 20's, electricity was being installed in the smaller towns and villages. This required conduit to be installed to protect the wiring, and someone decided that this was a job for plumbers, since they were good at installing pipes. This led to a job classification which combined the two. When we moved to Canada, he eventually found work as a plumber, and eventually I inherited his tool boxes. I still have a couple, and they still contain not only oakum, but several lead bars!

February 6, 20242 yr Popular Post The Karen's of today would totally freak out at the mere mention of lead, much less molten and explosion in the same sentence.  That said, there was a period of time when "workers" were considered expendable and monies were not spent on their safety. The bosses had thousands standing in line to take their place. Read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair for some insight into just how unimaginably bad things were and why, in retrospect, we should all be thankful for the rules and regulations today.  .40Â

February 6, 20242 yr Popular Post In retrospect and in many cases, the good old times weren't all that good. But, we survived and, had fun.
