My first intro to woodworking was wood shop in Jr. high school in early 60's.  Dad also had a large DeWalt table top saw he got used.  We could split 12 ft 2x4's to make stilts.

From there its been off and on making small cabinets for work shops I have had to fancy walking sticks, to self bows made of oak, knife handles out of burl walnut, dark cherry, apple, plaques for European game mounts.  Last big project was a work bench for my small shop with 18 drawers, 9 on each side to store all kinds of (wife calls it junk) that I have accumulated over the last 50 yrs.  Not a lot of major tools, a small table saw, a 6x48 with 9" disc belt sander, a 1" belt sander, a floor model drill press, and new to me 12" craftsman band saw.  Hand tools are two hand planes and a Disston hand saw, a home made draw knife numerous files and last but not least a hand made scroll saw that table and arm are Oak (friends dad built it and he didn't want it).  Got this one torn down for cleaning and part replacement at the moment.    Currently building a cowboy hat rack for my daughter-in-law.  For wood I scrounge from dumpsters at new homes being built in the area.   For walking sticks I get from folks cutting trees down for firewood or clearing lots.  Currently I have 24 pcs drying.  Some pics of projects.  Why did I join this site.  Looking to gain skills and knowledge, info on tools, both power and hand.  Note: Cherry Bench, I slabbed two out of a tree in the back yard in North Carolina.

Welcome to The Patriot Woodworker Don. Great to have you aboard. Love the pictures. The scroll saw is really cool. Glad you saw (no pun intended) fit to preserve it. The walking sticks are awesome. Well done on the bench and your workshop storage bench projects. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you. Great group of talented folks here always willing to help and share.

 

Speaking of sharing, did someone mention donuts? New guy always shares donuts with the group. Let us know when they're in the break room.

Scroll came from a friend who's dad built it and my guess is its 75 yrs old.  Friend does not work in wood, or metal, but at hunting and fishing and eating so He ask if I wanted it.  I have used it off and on for several years but the tension points for the main arm are iron on iron with a little grease.  Decided to rework and clean without realizing the cost of silicone brass, thought I had enough so it sits till I get the money to bring it back to life.

P_Toad, sorry it took so long to reply, have been out of town.  Busing is 3/8 long and 7/16" in dia with split, hole dia is 1/4" see pics attached

I think this collet will work

Lew, Thanks for the info.  First web site, part is discontinued.  Second web site is extremely questionable with 4 out of 5 reviews very negative.

@p_toad...just in case you didn't get see Don's response Pete. Hopefully you have one in your stash. If you do, I'm guessing Don would gladly trade you a donut for it.
