Still had plenty of resawn leftovers...and...since the last mantel clock I had built was back in the 1980s....Hmmmm

Nothing really wide enough?   We have ways 

Glued up a couple of panels for the sides of the clock case...

 

Most of the edges needed work with a plane...

And flipped around a bit, until the grain tended to line up..

Close, but not quite.   There WAS a beveled bit of fancy Ash...

That I can use for the Top of the case...and add a fancy Finial in it's center?

And a plain slab I can use for the base of the case..

That I can also bevel  the top edges...

Hmmm...A clock was bought at Hobby Lobby..

That sits into a 3" diameter hole....

 

Panel to house the clock needed to be a bit wider than just 2 boards...and a bit fancier grain...

This is 4 boards...and adds up to 7" wide....case also will need a door in back of the case, to access the battery..so..

Just 3 Plain boards....still the width is 7"...

My retirement watch from the union is still sitting in it's box. Battery has to be dead by now. 

Yep took the watch off when I retired. And then the wife goes and buys a watch with wood inlays. Had to wear it some for a couple years and now sitting on top the box with dead battery.

Hmm...I got a LOT of catching up to do...where was I...will try this..

 

Base:  once I had bevel the 4 sides...

There was a problem...sides were a bit too broad in the beam....but...I kept the edges I ripped off..to make "slips"  

 

Slips will help hold the face panel in place...( with a bead or 2 of glue )

But..they needed a mitered corner to look better...so..

The big Langdons can't do small parts like this but this Millers Falls will do just fine..

Mitre Box is held in the vise by..

This piece of scrap, screwed to the bed with counter sunk screws,,,saw is a Disston D8, 20" Panel saw, 10 ppi

Test for fit..

 

Then a bead of glue, and some clamps..and let sit a day..

Someone complained about c clamps having no place in a wood shop..so..

Needed one slip per side...on the inside face...These are the sides of the case...the "picture Framed"

slips are to go around the face panel..

 

Clock needed a way to drill a 3" diameter hole...I thought I had a way...

With this thing...it did score a line, 3" in diameter...but..FAILED to cut any deeper....so..today..

The Craftsman 13", Tilting Table, Direct Drive Scroll saw came off the shelf...uses a pinned 5" blade. 

Had to test fit the clock to this hole....either it won't fit...or it will just snap into place,  or..just fall back out...

And...we have a "Snap Fit"!

 

After that task..I needed 2 things done...first..I needed 4 glue blocks, cut to size, sanded square around and the counter sink a pilot hole...THEN glue each one in place..

Was nice having these spring clamps, but, after using these 4...

This was all there was left..back to the c clamps...

That "gap"?   that is where the  face panel will go...and it be a tight fit, too...let the 2 sides sit a spell..as the other item to do...was replace the camera's battery with a new, freshly charged one...as the "old" one had died..

 

 

later, once the battery was ready..decided on a dry fit of sorts...l already had the clock fitted to the face panel...so..I brought out the base, and both of the sides and the lid, with the finial to set on top

 

Still needs the top and bottom slip installed...a lot of sanding, plane work and a #80 scraper...but..something didn't look quite right ( and the reason FOR Dry Fits)

 

This top is too wide....by about an inch...so, to fix that.....ripped the "excess" off the back edge, where the punky wood is ( and it did crumble)  then re-bevel  the sawn edge, and refresh the other 3 bevels...try again..

Looks a bit better?    Left this sitting on the bench..no glue, nor screws (YET)..

Still need to finish the slips, now that I know the correct size...

Tracking down some 1" long screws..only need 4..

Lots of sanding marks to get rid of, and sand things down to 220 grit...plane where needed...#80 where it can work best...

 

Then maybe some assembly work? 

 

Then figure out building the battery door around in back...

add a few metal detail bits...and MAYBE a coat of finish next weekend?  we'll see

Whew, that was close. Almost got 'er done in '23.

What time is it? Time to take a break until next year.

Looks like a mighty fine mantle clock!

Multiple Spots of Fresh DNA...Project is now "Official"!

 

Time for a bit of assembly. spread out over 2 days of Shoptime...

Everything has been sanded to 220 grit..for now..

Also cut the bottom slip and a nail to help hold the trim in place while the glue sets up.....the 2 sides are glued in place, and a screw added...

 

Added the face plate ( without the clock)

Bead of glue along 3 edges, add a couple clamps and let sit a spell....

 

Came back, and fitted the top slip and glued it in place with the spring clamps..

Then worked on the Top for a wee bit...block planes to slightly bevel the edges top and bottom...then sand the bevels smooth..into a slight round over..

Drilled a counter sunk hole from the underside, and installed the "Finial"

Have to remember which is the "show face" and which will go around in back...

 

1st DNA?

 

door has become a back panel...will get screwed in place....can be removed IF need be...However, the back's panel needed a bit of work done..

Usual grip for the left hand...thumb gets hooked on the side of the plane by the handle/knob....fingers are curled under the plane's sole to act as a fence when doing Jointer work....I was planing along nicely enough, but got in a hurry...that's when bad things happen...

I pulled back a little too far...and..them corners are SHARP...

Figured the next day, I could glue the top on..and maybe get the metal parts installed..

These will need a few holes drilled first..

Tuesday's Shop time?

Holes have been drilled...high tech drill, too..

First drill...second drill was similar, but had a smaller bit than this 1/16" bit...

Needed 12 holes drilled...

Case was glued to the top...top is in the vise, BTW..

Vise holds the clamps...hammer to assist in lining things up...

This way, it will be easier to install these...

4 screws per foot...then I can add the corner trim pieces...but.. I needed to let this sit a day, and let the glue cure...

So...today?

How about a PIP?    No stain or finish...yet

 

And, while trimming one of the corners at the slips..chisel hopped up and sent a sharp corner into my left index finger..more DNA..

 

So..clock has been slipped back into place, and is Keeping time nicely..

Tomorrow, I need to go to Lowes for a couple brushes...one for the stain, one for the Amber Shellac...and maybe a couple more for a coat of varnish?

Most excellent interpretation of a mantle clock. Way to repurpose those leftover pieces.

Better file these one cell sketch up plans away. I foresee some December 2024 Christmas gift projects in your future.

Roh Kay, Raggy...I used a blank of the same wood to check on the colour of the Witch's Brew Stain...and..

Brushed on, and wiped down

Was hoping the grain details would pop a bit better...

 

All wiped down and dry...Try the Amber shellac?

Same Test strip..both bare wood and stained..

 

10 minute finish job?   Will rub this down in the morning, and go from there...
