a Celtic knot

I started with the picture too small to hold in my hands while grinding the unwanted parts away and decided to hang it on the wall as a reminder. I already had this small piece of wood so I made the picture fit in that area. I usually do it the other way like having the picture as the size I want to work with then prepare the wood to fit that size.

Thats only the second time in my life I made a mistake.20230613_170144.jpg.d63aa5d1f652d884d6f6460b740357e1.jpgAnd the back side shows the small pieces.

Man, it makes my head spin. That's one complicated pattern.  What's the size, Jesse?

I understand about mistakes. I thought I made one once but, I was wrong. B)

Good to have you back posting projects again Patch.

Thanks guys and Dave the only reason I slowed down posting things here is for some strange reason my body seems to want to keep me out of the shop and in to an easy chair.. I made myself a promise when I was a teen as I could see those old folks not being able to walk like they use to and it really puzzled me, were they trying to get attention or what...

Well I decided I am not a quitter on projects that lots of labor is involved like this Knots puzzle so yesterday I started back on the Celtic thingy.. 20230615_111051toomuchgrinding.jpg.b4c9fd75a1305db3c3b72f72cf11c96e.jpg

This morning I used the little air angle grinder just on the areas outside of the Knots and am getting ready to start sanding on everything after lunch.

Most all the actual Knots pieces are all built so only one sander was used here.  And the 1 x 42" belt disk sander is the most used sander in my shop. I have got to where that little I " wide sanding material gets used in all kind of positions. Sure I do get a little skin every once in a while but hey if that's as bad as I ever get in this shop, so I'm happy...

That I" round bit on the angle grinder is probably 4 or 5 years old and still as good as the day I started using it and it does all the inside curves if I have an area to handle it.

I can't remember what it is called but Wood Carvers Supply in Florida has a picture of it in their catalog. And this bit has always been used on hard maple but this time only I used popular for it was already the size I needed.

Oh, and the angle grinder From Harbor Freight I think still less than 25.00. It has a 1/4" collet chuck so a person can only use 1/4" bits with it.  The Dremels are 1/8" and smaller but there are good bits from the same supplier that does just as good only for smaller areas.

GREAT job, Jesse.  Thanks for posting.   Danl

Ps,  Keep those posting coming.

Terri you aught to see all the limbs me and mom cut down since you guys were here...it has taken a few days and its been harder each day for us to get back in the house.

Lots of small pecans on all the limbs but hey they were rubbing all areas of the house and it was hard getting to sleep listening to those sounds.

I deleted that question you asked if I could make this.. All I remember it had lots of dominoes in the picture.. I was deleting things on the  phone and didn't know it was also deleting all that stuff on the computer at the same time.

If its making all those dominoes, no because of all the jigs to set up because of all those dots on the dominoes and more so because they are twice as many dots as a regular set .This is one time I say the computer guys with those cnc machines would be the best way to go.

Looks like great progress going on

I get it Patch. My back surgery a couple years ago has slowed me down more than I ever expected. They must have removed my get-up-and-go while they were in there.

I manage to get the have to things done and a few extras but I still can't stand long periods.

But enough whining on my part. Project looks great so far.

Dad, Momma told me that y’all had 60 MPH winds - it is no wonder the pecans were pelting the house. 💙💨

This is coming along nicely Jess

Hey, Dad. Check your e-mail. I only want a wooded train station hub. I have the dominoes and trains.

Heres what it looks like today. Am finished with applying the finish which was Rusteolum 2 X matte  after a few coats.. I have decided its the best finish out there and much easier than anything I have ever used. I had put some numbers up a little too high and would have been showing so I used the air brush with some dark stain and lightly sprayed each side and the numbers have disappeared much easier than trying to sand out the marks- so - lot .20230616_181708.jpg.86c792ea2e001eb590f2a77e82e115a7.jpg

Nothing glued down yet as I think I have switched a few pieces around to make sloppy fits so I will try to put them back where they should be.

Here is something to remember..... I use cardboard to lay out the pieces to spray and to keep them from sliding off the cardboard I use Aleene's regular glue with just a very small amount on each piece and let set for a few minutes before you start spraying....I use the Aleene's glue in the brown bottle for it takes longer get real hard and that does help when using a knife to remove by scraping it away before I glue the pieces on the wood..
