What kind of wood is this

Featured Replies

Hello fellow woodworkers. I'm new here. My name is Sarah and I'm from California and live in Arizona. I was just wondering if anyone could possibly help me identifying the wood type of this table I just picked up and am in beginning of restoring? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Sarah, but I'm probably the wrong person to try and help. Someone will be along with an idea of what that is.

Glad to see you here Sarah.  Welcome to TPW.  I'm like Fred, no expert on wood types.  (Or much of anything else really.)  But that black stain on the first picture could be concerning.  I recommend that you have someone who is an expert look at it and make sure you did not bring some black mold into your house or shop.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with @lew.  Hickory is very often used for table tops.

Welcome to the forum.

I was thinking some kind of oak but hickory will work too. Either would accept any finish that you want to include stains and dyes. Hard finish with any varnish, polyurethane, lacquer, shellac or other hard shell finish.

I'm thinking that black is the original finish color and it's only been partially removed (by sanding?)

If it's an import piece, it's difficult as there are very many species that are abroad that we don't have in North America.  But I'm not sure the species even matters if you are doing a strip and refinish.  If you do a clear coat, you will see contrast between the heartwood (darker) and sapwood (lighter) components.

Welcome to The Patriot Woodworker Sarah. Glad you found us.

I agree with ID thoughts already given and especially the assessment provided by Keith.

Stay connected with us on this and other projects or questions you may have.

Hey Sarah. Welcome to God's country. In what part of the desert do you reside? We're west of Marana, out past the Saguaro National Monument.

Sadly she hasn't been back since her question.
