I guess if we don't want to pull nails there are other options.

$4.10/BF for nasty lumber?  pass...  9 pieces is 12 BF.

yeah, the pallet prices here are off the wall, i'm not a pallet wood fella, but have a couple friends who are, having been in const. we had gaggles of pallets, always had some to pass on, these days seems they are going metal and plastic on a lot of things, i use plastic type for stuff in yard ,keeps bugs away.

I mainly disassemble them for the nails. Of course it takes a while to straighten all the nails but they come in handy when I build pallets from the reclaimed pallet lumber.

As a younger guy I always had more time than money.  Even if it took me an extra week, the end result was worth it to me.  My work isn't all that anyhow.  I've seen a lot of what I would call old primitive stuff; chairs, stools, tables and the like that people want.  So I've made picture frames, shelves, blanket chests, a desk, literally dozens of projects out of reclaimed and recycled wood.  I get a lot of satisfaction simply from the journey of the project.

That's all we need, right?

When I first started woodworking and didn’t have many tools I used pallet wood for some projects. I was working at a hospital and they had a ton of pallets come through there and they let me pick through them. There were some good wood but had to look for it, and it was free. A lot of places will gladly let you take what you want.

Just used two pallet frame pieces (from a motorcycle crate delivery) to glue up for stretchers on a tool bench I'm making.  Not a furniture quality indoor piece, so a couple nail holes won't weaken or distract from their stretcher roles.   Makes me glad I saved them.
