Popular Post steven newman Posted December 15, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted December 15, 2022 There is a Pine plank just sitting around...starting to get quite a twist to it. 1/2" x 6" x 6"......thinking I can cut it up into the 6 parts to build a box...using just hand tools? And maybe post a bunch of photos on HOW such a thing can be done? I MIGHT use the bandsaw for one task, but that would be about it.....all the rest will be by hand...and using just that one Pine plank. Not sure IF I should post it here....or..up in General Woodworking? Or both? Stay tuned...camera is charging up at the moment... Cal, Gerald, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted December 16, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 16, 2022 Well..cross cuts are done... Plank has ...."issues" Red dot is where the tree's pith was. Board also was trying to twist....decided to just rip the pith out...and glue the two halves back together... Rip saw? A bit too much Cardio...set up the rip fence to remove the 1" wide center.. Then clamp the 2 halves up in the vise, and run Junior along as a Jointer.. To get a decent glue joint.. Vise also works as a 3rd hand...and a caul...have a blank for the front and back.... a panel for the lid, and the bottom of the box..and a pair of ends... Ends need to match the 4-1/2" width/height....so that the lid panels will fit.....Sides are now 4-1/2" tall. By 12" long....depending on how much I need to square the ends. Letting the parts sit overnight...tomorrow the hand planes get put back to work...need to clean up the glue lines, flatten the faces....and start laying out for 1/2" through Dovetails for the corners....then MAYBE start ploughing 3 grooves.....as the "lid" will get a dust seal. Stay tuned Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gerald, forty_caliber and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted December 17, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 17, 2022 (edited) Parts are out of the clamps.. Time to flatten them all.. Plane is a Van Camp (Stanley?) No. 4.....then needed them all to be the same width, so.... Gang them up and joint them...made enough of a mess on the floor, today.. That I had to stop and sweep things up...Bench was a bit crowded today.. Had to sort through to find the lay out tools I needed.. So I could lay out the pins, first.. Don't forget to mark the waste....then a bit of saw work.. Old Jackson Backsaw....then chop from the outside face....about half way down.. Then flip over, and finish removing the waste. Use the completed pins to lay out the match tails.....bandsaw to make the cuts.....Because I can SEE the cuts better ( despite breaking a bandsaw blade),,then chop out the waste and try for a dry fit... 3 3 hours to get this far....area between the shoulder blades is very sore. One corner done, 3 to go...maybe Saturday, eh? Most of today's shop time, was spent planing the boards flat..and get things square...BEFORE I could start of any dovetails... Stay tuned... You have an excellent piece of Americana Midwest Indiana history. Really fairly rare especially in such condition. Van Camp Hardware was Indiana's version of Blue Grass Hardware. Most likely was a Stanley branded specifically for Van Camp. I have a couple Van Camp socket chisels. BTW, excellent work as usual on the box. lew, Cal, HARO50 and 1 other 3 1 Quote

Double cool. Obviously someone with no connection to us Hoosiers. IDK about the block planes. I think some of those were made by Miller-Falls. I have a M-F 56. I love it. Cal and lew 2 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted December 21, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 21, 2022 Ok, up-date time....all 4 corners are done.. And, each side of the box now has 3 grooves on the inside faces.. Grooves were made with the Stanley #45... Had to change from the short rods over to... the LONG rods, as the short ones wouldn't reach this far... Panels for the lid and the bottom of the box have been sized to fit.. The 3rd groove is part of a Dust Seal...there is to be an over-lapping groove around the outside of the box.. Everything was dry fitted up...and then glued up, this morning.. Letting this sit a day...then clean it up...and then add the 4th groove.....hopefully the lid will come off...we'll see.. Stay tuned.. Cal, lew, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted December 21, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted December 21, 2022 Well as many times as I have looked at your posts just noticed the screws used as hold downs. Would have never thought of that. steven newman, Grandpadave52, lew and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted December 23, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 23, 2022 Ok..back out of the clamps,,, , And needed cleaned up.. Then on to the outside groove...that I THOUGHT was laid out, correctly... And, maybe fill in a few holes? Hmmm... Something don't look right...might as well continue...too late to change... Nope, not working out...once the lid was free, took a #4 and leveled things down...and did away with the "Dust Seal" idea.... Trying to close up any gaps, too....Then see about adding the hinges... Pilot hole drill by Goodell Pratt Co....screwdriver IS a Phillip's....then flip this over, to add the latch.. Nice when I have a full box of hardware to sort through... Before I can add the handles on the ends...there is a small matter of filling in the holes... Not Chopsticks...ripped a couple strips of pine...this one hole needed 2 strips...blob of glue, and a Irwin Flush cut saw to trim off..repeat for the other 7 holes...and sand smooth.. What holes? Then I could add the handles... then set it down to see IF the lid works.. Then close it back up, for now.. Nothing fancy...made from a single Pine board...mostly hand tools used, too...
