September 18, 20223 yr Popular Post Pecan bowl rough turned last fall. It was too big for the soap bucket so I packed it away in it's own shavings until it was dry enough to turn the 2nd time. Finished with Ack's and Odie's. .40 Edited September 18, 20223 yr by forty_caliber
September 28, 20223 yr Very nice bowl. A friend of mine did a finish turning on a pecan bowl and he said the wood was very hard. Did you have the same experience?

Pecan, is in the Hickory family and has a Janka hardness of 1820 (harder than white oak or hard maple) or so. That said, it machines well and doesn't dull your tools as quickly as some other woods. I find that moistening the surface with a small amount of mineral order can soften the grain allowing for a nice finish cut. .40
