August 7, 20223 yr Popular Post The leg is mending and today I gave it a few hours working in the shop. Minor pain and a little swelling but as a favorite Marine of mine once said “ pain is what reminds you you’re still alive”. I have been meaning to make a new resaw post using bearings so today was the day. I need to resaw some more teak tomorrow and we will give it a test run. Paul
August 7, 20223 yr Author Popular Post It should work fine. I made it with some very inexpensive bearings, a piece of 1/2” all thread and a bunch of 1/2” nuts. The only problem I see is that the bearings were not of large enough diameter to allow the body not to interfere with the guide post assembly. That would have involved much larger and more expensive bearings. In order to make this work I’m going to have to make two more that are progressively shorter to allow for smaller stock. Fortunately they only take a few minutes to make. Paul
August 7, 20223 yr Popular Post Gadzooks!!! That sure beats the dowel, nailed to a board, that I'm using!!
August 7, 20223 yr Paul knows about them, I know. But, the Carter guides do wonders for resawing. As well as with other bandsaw work. At least with the little Shopsmith band saw. Edited August 7, 20223 yr by Gene Howe
August 7, 20223 yr Author Popular Post I agree Gene. My son has the Carter on his SS bandsaw and it’s excellent. I guess that goes for most of the Carter products. My problem here is I needed one 15” in height and sonce I had to build that one I might as well build two more for shorter stock. The best thing Carter makes for bandsaws is their FAST alignment tool. Those are really quick and take all the pain out of the fence to blade alignment task. Paul
August 7, 20223 yr Popular Post For resawing on the Shopsmith, the Kreg miter gauge, used as a fence, with it's 24" long face, serves quite well. With a good, 5/8" blade, consistantly good results are easy. The miter fence is only 2.5" tall but, with the height limitations of the Shopsmith, it's not been a problem. One could affix a taller plywood or, melamine fence. I've not found it necessary.
August 7, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Well the concept worked fine for today but definitely has a design flaw that needs to be worked out. Building it the way I did will work fine for tall pieces like today but for shorter and pieces less than 1 1/2” thick it needs a bearing closer to the table. An 1 1/2” off the table is too far for the bottom bearing. I have an idea that should work. To be continued. Paul
August 8, 20223 yr Happy to hear you're back in the shop Paul. Interesting thread. Will be following to see updates. Thanks.
