For those who use Sketchup Make

I'm posting this here since it didn't seem to me that it fit in the CNC or woodworking categories, plus it won't be tagged here. Anyway, this is a message Dave Richards posted on another forum I frequent. He is a member here, but doesn't visit that often so I thought I'd copy and paste his post here...complete credit to him. This may be of interest to some of you.

"I happened to see a question on that other woodworking forum from someone who opened SketchUp 2017 Make recently and got a message regarding potential security issues. It seems likely that some folks here might see the same thing so I thought I'd address it.

Trimble has after nearly 5 years removed the link for SketchUp 2017 Make from their website. Their official statement is here. For those who are still using this version, you will need to make a decision about what to do concerning the security issue. It's kind of the same thing with any old software that can access the internet or can be accessed from the internet. I don't think I'd panic about this message but it's good to be aware of it.

For those who are thinking they'd like to start using SketchUp 2017 Make, I will say there are unofficial sources for the installer. I'm not going to share those links, however, because I don't know what nasty stuff might get downloaded with it and I don't want to be blamed if someone has problems due to a virus or other mean and nasty stuff being included.

The browser-based versions of SketchUp are very usable and while they don't yet have the ability to use extensions, they are quite capable."

Dave is the man! I read the same thing the other day.

I have downloaded Sketchup Make 2017 from Trimble and have it saved on my PC. If anyone wants the official copy, I will burn it to a DVD or upload it to a cloud account.

This is the 64bit version

Can we have the link to the browser based version?

Fred, thank you for the post.  I was about ready to test it - now I won't.

Don't like security issues - have enough trouble as it is in keeping the "evil doers" out of my 'puter

Does anyone know if I can have both the 2017 version and the latest version on the same computer?  I have a friend who wants some help learning Sketchup.  I currently have the 2017 version on my laptop and I do not want to loose it.

2nd question:  Using the latest version, is there a way to store files on the hard drive and not use the cloud?

Thanks   Danl

Danl,

The current free version of Sketchup- "Sketchup Free" is designed to be cloud based. Let me do some research to see if models can be saved locally.

As for Sketchup Make (Sketchup 2017), You should be able to use the cloud based version and keep "Make" on your PC.

I'll try to get you an answer today.

I was able to create a project and download it to my desktop. Using:

Meet SketchUp Free: online 3D design software that lets you dive in and get creating without downloading a thing. The best part: it's free.

@Danl

Got this back from the Sketchup Community.

I asked:

1. Can models created in Sketchup Free (web based) be saved on the local computer?

Ans- Yes. You “download” the model

2. Can Sketchup Free (web based) be run on the same computer as other versions of Sketchup (Make, Shop, Pro) without a conflict. Will not be running both at the same time.

Ans- Yes, but if you are logged into SketchUp with the account that has the Pro or Go (new name for Shop) license assigned to it, the online version opens as Go (same as Shop).

Thanks John and Lew.  I appreciate your prompt response.    Danl
