April 3, 20224 yr comment_287608 I'm impressed. Does the splitting in the post bother you? Are there precautions needed? Report

Are there precautions needed? that post has been there about 28 years, and the crack/split self drains, so it's ok. the post also sounds sound. but the beam was letting in water and trapping it, leading to rot in the beam and replaced corbel. so replaced the bad, tried to seal the cracks to slow down the decay to past my time. April 3, 20224 yr Author comment_287626 the original was held together with WAY TOO MANY galvanized finishing nails. most sunk flush and very hard to pull out. FINE. reciprocating saw and 11" metal blade it is then! after jacking up just a bit, to create some space, sawed them all in two, and then could remove the old corbels and prep things for the new ones. the new ones are held in place with a limited number of 3-1/2" long star drive deck screws, all either underneath the overhang, or on the inside of the porch, and thus out of the weather. looks better, and one less hole to let water in long term. several screws to hold the corbels in place attaching to the beam above, and just one screw attaching to the post below. and way easier to remove when that day comes, as they are mostly rust proof, and are out of the weather, so less chance to rust out. and worst case, another reciprocating saw and metal blade down the road....
