Drill Press needs a stand to sit on

Featured Replies

Decided to at least get a plywood panel cut for it to sit on...and figure out how big the stand will be.   3/4" plywood, left outside, leaning against the house on the back patio...FREE WOOD! :Cheer:  Needed a quick way to cut a chunk off...framing square and a black sharpie to mark a cut line...then the saw..:JawDrop:

No problem.   ( used this again, later) 6-1/2" blade seems to be still sharp.  :ChinScratch:

When the roofers were cutting on the sheet..they left a big tear-out....so, I trimmed back to that spot...Later, I went back to that sheet, and cut a second panel off of it.

More on that, later.:WonderScratch:

Worked out how to cut those 2 x 4s to the sizes I could use..needed 4 legs, 2 front braces, and 2 side braces...That was done.  Did NOT like the rounded over edges..so, rip fence was set up to peel that edge off..

To make laying out half lap joints a bit easier to do.  Then, the cutting began?  Not quite...remember that second plywood panel?:ChinScratch:

Also ripped to match the width of the Pine parts...these will be the lower braces..:ChinScratch:

Now, to get a half lap joint, I need to remove a bit of lumber...:MachineGun:

And this is the quickest way, IF you have a lot to do.  Set the blade height to the halfway point...run the board through, using the fence as a stop block:OldManSmiley:

Then, bring it back to the bench vise..:ChinScratch:

Mallet to break as much out,as I can...then a chisel to pare it flat...:OldManSmiley:

This one is for the lower brace...

Dry fit?

2 legs done...side notches for the side stretchers and braces...had to keep double checking, to make sure they were all on the correct sides..:ChinScratch:

Then the other 2 legs..Narrow part will be either the front or back of the stand...:OldManSmiley:

And the matching parts, done...I'm pooped....:GoodNight:

Will try to assemble this mess...tomorrow...I'm done for today:DevilLaughing:

Assemble with glue and screws..and a big square...

How messy was today?

This was just from knocking all the chips free, and a bit of paring...Tablesaw?:JawDrop:

Busy day. Multi-tasking two unrelated projects going at one time. I'm tired just trying to keep up with all your project updates. I'll be here as Paul Harvey used to say...Page...two.

Late night, last night..:GoodNight:..decided to get this thing assembled....so..:SaluteandRun:

311611379_DrillPressStand1stcorner.JPG.049714df9b868adadcf478bbe7d3a0ed.JPG

Glue and counter sunk screws...1st corner,1st leg...it's a start.  Wasn't happy with it just laying on the bench...needed a 3rd hand to help out:ChinScratch:

1246282942_DrillPressStandlowerbrace.JPG.7b22f5df3f9afceec9206a00eb090819.JPG

Drill and counter sink bit was a #12...screws are a #6...drill the holes first in the braces, then install in a bead of glue...clamps as need to pull things tight..Bottom braces are 3/4" plywood...Vise makes a nice 3rd hand, BTW..:OldManSmiley:

2002846675_DrillPressStand3rdhand.JPG.113d2bc41b5c9bfff66c526fe33929ba.JPG

2nd leg...these screws will not show, as this is the inside...set this aside repeat for the other end..:OldManSmiley:

560281777_DrillPressStandneededpulledtogether.JPG.93acc705d10d559845e714bdc9d0d55e.JPG

Issues with that one corner...needed pulled into place, then onto the long sides...:Cheer:

1086615858_DrillPressStandaddedthesides.JPG.56a6485595dae9061ba757aa89bba1e9.JPG

Can't help it, these screws will be seen...and this was a ROYAL PITA to do...lots of clamps were needed...and a lot of cussing...:ArguingSmileys:

Finally, it was able to stand up on it's own 4 feet....needed a top added:ChinScratch:

1586897912_DrillPressStandaddedthetop.JPG.37566b6e8673ae922c665c3cfecf769b.JPG

More of that 3/4" plywood...I did notice that this stuff had NO VOIDS in it.

Next? well..:WonderScratch:

555999754_DrillPressStandbolteddown.JPG.00ccad6966d559013e6014e429cb1cae.JPG

Had to swing that table to access the bolts...both to move the Drill Press, and to install it..centered on the new top..:ChinScratch:

2082883594_DrillPressStandcompleted.JPG.c356f36924a0a632123e5abb25e9efab.JPG

Already plugged in, and tested..

So, NOW I can get back to making a couple boxes...:cowboy:

Stand looks like it should do the job save for having a place to keep all your drill bits and such close by. One of the best organization changes I did for myself over the years was making a shelf or little rack that lives by my drill press(es) to keep all my bits and related drill accessories on/in.
