using off-cuts and scraps.

began squaring and gluing last year's accumulation of off-cuts, trimmings, and scraps. it's a slow and tedious process but results in some beautiful end grain cutting

boards. the tote and cans are all pieces cut to length and in-process of prepping the edges for gluing. on the sander are pieces in the various stages of gluing, squaring, and final glue-up ready for flattening.
Also got the new electric panel powered up and meter installed today. yippee now I can run more than one tool at a time.

I thought scraps were sawdust....just saying. Question is what are you going to do with 531 cutting boards :)? All kidding aside they should make some great cutting boards and very nice gifts.

Back when I had zero patience, old Harry North was teaching me silver smithing [his brother was Alex North]. I once complained that something was taking soooo loooongggg.  Harry replied, "What, kid? You have somewhere you have to go? Got to go run off to put out a fire? Have somewhere you have to be? Some big emergency?" He was in his 80s, had seen it all, and had a way of telling you like it was.

It took many more years to get a degree of patience. Restringing a mandolin. That takes patience. Now I look at some jobs, knowing they will take two weeks or four months, and stick to the program.

Is a planer to level against the grain different from other planers?

That's some pile of wood. My little blocks are jealous. :D

I am going to direct your question to our resident plane expert @steven newman

Others may chime in too.

Set the plane to where it just starts to cut.   Then skew the plane at a 45 degree to the direction you want to go,,,then push the plane forward, letting the cutter/iron do a slicing cut, instead of trying to peel off a layer like you would going with the grain..

When leveling an end-grain cutting board, do you run it through an electric planer?  Are the blades or the machine set up differently?

I've only had luck trimming an end grain with a very sharp chisel. One shaving at a time. :o  But with my honing stones finally cleaned up and the honing guide here, I'll work on getting a proper edge on my hand plane blades.

Ahh. Yes. <lightbulb moment> Comprehension. 45˚slicing vs. 90˚ chopping onions. Kind of.

John Hechel, you mention the sander. I'm guessing your finished boards are going through a sander, not a planer.

Looks it! I'd want a dedicated cut-offs fabrication shop. :)

You cannot place end grain cutting boards thru a planer. Wide belt sander is the best way.

Can also use hand held belt sander.
