December 28, 20214 yr Popular Post I entered a wood build contest through my local Woodworking guild. Basic requirement is that maximum material usage is 5-1/3 bd ft. I was conscience of my usage and had to modify my design a few times to be compliant. It is an original design inspired by Michael Fortune. The material selected was White oak. Soon General Finishes High Performance WB Topcoat will be applied to have a natural finished. Joinery is mortise & tenon. The rear legs are tapered bent lamination. The back supports are bent lamination, and to stay true to form, the front legs are lamination. The seat was scooped using the table saw and the design has it appearing floating. There are few opposing parallel sides and those that are have curves. The front legs are the chair’s beefiest in material thickness and the material selection gets lighter as you look up to the back supports, mimicking the profile of the rear legs. The back supports tapper down to the width of the rear of the seat then the seat front tappers to the width of the back supports. Thanks for looking. Danl
December 28, 20214 yr Most excellent Dan. I love the appearance of the "floating seat." That is really cool. Win or not, you did GOOD! Now that you've mastered this, a full-size version should be next up.
December 28, 20214 yr Popular Post Wonderfully executed all the way down to the carved out seat. I hope you won. Edited December 28, 20214 yr by HandyDan
December 28, 20214 yr Popular Post What a great chair. What superb craftsmanship. No need to see any other entrants. You win, hands down!
December 28, 20214 yr A truly stunning design that was really well executed....I have to think you will win the contest. Nicely done! Scaled up to adult size, that would be a wonderful design for a set of adult chairs. Edited December 28, 20214 yr by Fred W. Hargis Jr

December 28, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Thank you all for the kind words. The contest is Jan. 20. We could not start building until Nov. 18. Designing and building the rear legs was the most fun. Each rear leg has eight tapered pieces, 1/8" at the top and 3/16" at the bottom. I build a tapering and bending jig to support the fabrication. Tapered lamination was a new process for me. Because the legs have a finished width of 1", I chose to bend them from the same laminations and use the bending form to support the leg during final sizing. The top of the leg is cut at 18-deg. Thanks again. Danl
December 28, 20214 yr Popular Post Doesn’t that hem you in a corner, and now you need to build 3 more chairs and a table? Beautiful work.

That suggestion has been suggested. I have in the back of my mind to build an adult size wooden settee/hall bench using features from this project. Some day maybe. Danl
