November 13, 20214 yr Popular Post A Garage sale find earlier this summer....Millers Falls No. 1816 MitreBox and saw.....Paid $1....needed to pull the nails holding the box to an old pine 2 x 8 plank.. Got to looking the saw over....Warranted Superior 4" x 16".....Hmmm, might be worth a rehab? (hide yer eyes, Mabel! ) And.. Shouldn't have to worry about any etch, would have been a silk-screened thing anyway...but...that handle needs ..something... Yeah...right. Traced a better looking pattern, bandsaw to remove the worst areas......Flex-shaft Dremel with several different sanding grit drums....LOTS of sanding dust...check the grip with my hands....refine as the hand tells me to....dig around in the "spares drawer" find a couple better looking bolts.....then a coat of stain... Look a wee bit better? Sanded the saw plate as clean as I could...polished the bolts.. Shows some improvement? Test fit back into the mitre box.. The old 2x plank is outside, sitting in the firepit. That orange sticker? Was their asking price...wound up paying just a dollar bill...at least the logo can be read... I think I was maybe 9 yrs old when this was made.....which means I also need to rehab the box... needs a new deck, this one is getting pretty chewed up...There is a spot ... That I'll need to copy....as that is where the uprights rotate in... That little yellow handle Irwin removed the bolts, 2 per fence piece.. More screws and a bolt...this is what the uprights use as a base...three lobe tightens things up, once an angle is agreed upon... Uprights, there is a captured square nut that sits inside the uprights. 2 more bolts...and the rest of the parts... Legs are separate pieces. ALL the wood screws appear to be the same....might have been out of the same bin? Have a decent looking Ash board in the shop....might just make a new deck out of it? Forstner bit to make that recess...THEN rip the 1 x 6 to width? Have already jointed one edge.. Stay tuned
November 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Wow Bandit. That's gonna be a $1 jewel especially with the logo nearly pristine. Love the saw handle rework. Great idea. Can't wait to see the finished results.
November 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Here in the commonwealth, we have a road trip me Missus and me like to take. We drive out west on the Mohawk Trail. There is a town on the trail that is named Milers Falls. Same Millers Falls?
November 13, 20214 yr Popular Post Just now, steven newman said: Yep.... Well if you need me to stop by the factory and pick you up a couple of parts lemme know LOLOL.
November 13, 20214 yr Popular Post If that’s Greenfield Mass, it’s only about 10 miles from Millers Falls.
November 16, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok....wire wheel to de-rust all the metal parts ( was on Laundry Detail, again) and the cloth wheel to polish things up... Bare areas that USED to be painted...are now painted black, again...without getting any on that logo.....however, my fingers were a different story... Then on to a bit of woodworking....drill press was set up with a 1-7/8" Forstner bit.. Scrap of pine to level the "table" so the Ash plank will sit level... Combo square set to the depth I need to drill to...took a bit of time...no rush...waiting on the washer to get done, anyway..Location was laid out, using the old deck board.. I drilled the hole first..then cross cut to length... Then reset the saw to do a rip cut..finally was able to see how well I did... Close enough. Need to locate 2 pilot holes exactly.... VIX bit to drill these....Screwdriver is a Witherby, from England, no less...holes are for a plate.. This is the "base" of the uprights...when I cleaned the rust off of this.. I found a "Made in USA " and a scale showing the degrees...goes from 45-0-45 degrees. And this is where the cussing began... to assemble this "thing" the 2 halves of the upright get bolted together...BEFORE that square nut can be "dropped" down inside...then try to add the 3 lobed item and the carriage bolt to the underside of that plate...while trying to keep the nut in place..Just getting the nut to lay flat and NOT turn...took a long screwdriver holding it down....finally....test drive showed I needed to carve out a small area to allow the thing to rotate.....which meant taking the dang thing apart...and then put it back together...whew...washer was done....move that load to the dryer...time to install the back/fence... Went to VIX Bit the first pilot hole...snap...bit broke off IN the wood...dig that out...dig out a different pilot hole drill bit...even with waxing the threads on the screws...witherby was having too much trouble.....kept jumping up out of the slot, and trying to stab me hand...we have ways.. Brace is a Goodell Pratt co. #408. Made in Greenfield, MA. about 1905, I think....might have been a wee bit before my time? Scratch Awl to mark where the drill bit goes ( #12 counter sink all in one) then let the brace drive them screws home...bit in the brace is a flat screwdriver bit, sized the match them slots..Fence done, legs installed.. In the uprights, notice the slotted bolt? The guide for the saw slides down inside the uprights, then two of the bolts can lock the guide in place above the top of the deck...sanded the new deck, rounded a few edges...then a coat of Gunstock stain.. Check how the guide will rotate.. Swung around to 45 degrees...confirmed on the scale around in back.. There is a little tab on the uprights...that act as a "Pointer" May varnish the deck later.....next up? Sharpen a VERY DULL saw.... Stay tuned..
