October 24, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Didn't like what was left of the grooves and beveled edges..so.. About two trips around the block, can always add a bevel, if need be.. Panel came out of the clamps..needed a light leveling ..we have ways... seems one of the 2 parts was a bit thicker than the other one..hmmm, getting better.. Had to barely skim the ends..to get them squared up...test fit? Added a better bevel around the top edges of the box...ones that fit this lid a bit better. Found some better hinges, too Corners of the lid... Going with a small miter cut....circled one needs trimmed a bit...big circle area was NOT flat....we have ways for that.. Little #4 sized smooth plane. No chatter, no tear outs...try again.. Even sits flat on the top of the box. Will try to stain the beads a bit darker....so they stand out better....need to go shopping for a better latch, too.. Dungeon Shop tries to be "Mistake Free".....as mistakes usually go into the Fire Pit. Again, work sessions are controlled by how the knee feels, when it says time to quit for the day...shop gets shut down. Called a Baker's Cyst....waiting to see how rehab does with it... Stay tuned
October 25, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Well...I do know the lid is as flat as I can plane it,,,and as smooth as I can get it....however...WHY does the lid still rock.....almost like corners at the diagonals are different, doesn't matter which face is up.....still rocks the same...hmmmmm We have ways.. Seems this corner and the one diagonally across from it were a tad bit too high....planed them until the lid no longer rocked.....Then got a start of hinge install... Scratch Awl for the 2 pilot holes. Each of those lines is from a chisel, being struck twice. I don't NEED a lot of depth. Then a chisel to remove the waste..and then add a hinge.. That be THE smallest Phillips screwdriver I had in the shop, at the time....Then see how much hinge will show, once the lid is on.. And that will be all you'll see. Need to find a few more wooden knobs... As those white pads are way too big and clunky looking...Wooden Knobs to make 4 feet...sounds about right. Also...next time IN the shop... I think I need to put a bunch of toys away....at least so I can FIND my workbench, again...Maybe? Knee Rehab Tuesday morning..after that, we'll see what happens Stay tuned..
October 27, 20214 yr I like the new lid much better. It did look morbid before. Again, you gave me some ideas as I am planning to build one similar for DIL for Christmas. Thanks for the Work In Progress.
October 27, 20214 yr Author Popular Post New lid is proving to be a bit..."difficult"....2nd mortise for the hinges .... A bit of chisel work...while I'm sitting down, of course.. Wonder how many miles? Needed a better way to level the bottom of the mortise.. We have ways....Hinges are installed on the box.... Hmm, no wonder I'm having trouble getting the lid centered....need to straighten out that bad bevel..to about the red line... Troublesome lid? Well, there is a spot I keep working over... That corner is a hair thicker than the others...we have ways.. Went to attach the lid to the box..... Oooops, hmmm..... Repairs are done, waiting on the glue to cure.. While clearing the top of the bench for action....found about 5 pencils..all dull....Sharpening Day! Hey...there IS a bench under there, after all! Just in time for LUNCH! Catfish Fillets ( South Carolina Style) Fries, and under the cornbread is a serving of their Cole Slaw... No sign of a roofing crew...called the Landlord ( AGAIN ) Waiting on the fish to settle in/out, and glue to dry... Stay tuned..
November 4, 20214 yr Author Popular Post To bring this mess up to date....New feet have been installed... Lid uses a simple magnet and steel plate.. Like that corner detail? A look from the outside, since the 2nd coat of poly has been buffed out.. Trying to get the grain the flow around the corners.. Front view IS rather plain... Just a smidge fancier, grain-wise, than the back.. Wasn't really enough room inside for a tray....I think I can call this box...done? Thanks for looking in...
November 4, 20214 yr Popular Post That's a nice looking box, Bandit. Is it big enough to hold that #4 for shipment?
November 4, 20214 yr Popular Post Nice looking box Steven, and pretty darned cool what you did with the corner spline.
