I love watching Craft in America, it's a PBS exclusive that features artists in our America. The quality of the show is extraordinary as they feature the artisans that help make up our culture as Americans. If you've never seen Craft in America, it's my opinion you have been missing out on the exploration of a wonderful segment of our American culture. The cinematography is wonderful, and the music they feature with the program is relaxing and fitting for each segment they feature.

You should be able to watch it at your local PBS programing as they come available, or if you stream your shows you can binge watch it at the PBS streaming channel.

 

Here is a wonderful out take featuring one of my favorite woodworkers "George Nakashima" and his daughter "Mira Nakashima". Enjoy!

I’m going to do a first this week.  Over the past few years I have built 3 cradles for a guy that owns a large farming operation.  He contacted me last week and wants me to build an oak entry door.  I have no idea what he has in mind but Igor might be a challenging project.

Picked apples over the weekend.  Wife is making apple butter, and I was enlisted for peeling (not my favorite job.)  She mentioned reading about using a drill to peel the apples.  Impaled an apple on a small spade bit, put the cordless drill on low speed/reverse (I'm a righty), set the peeler against the apple, and zip!  Like a lathe, I guess.   More on the domesticated side where I'm a work in progress.

They do make a hand cranked peeler. Ours works well.

 

I am working on a cradle for pastor's family . Been in family maybe over 80 years. They thought it was made by a grandfather but I found very similar on an estate sale so looked back at 30' sears catalog and found similar there also.  I was in pieces so took the ends apart and stripped most paint. Found blue was first color and then pink and finally white. Not taking the rails apart but have almost completed strip. Going out as a knock down so maybe it will last another 80.

Lew, this project got ugly fast.  There’s a small enclosed front porch area that the guy hangs out in.  He wants a custom exterior 36” bifold door.  Think oak closet door that opens in (right to left),folds in half but has a pair of bolts to keep it flat when it is closed.  He also wants a beveled glass 40” long insulated pane in the left side.  I think I’m going to decline the job.  Too many headaches.  Oh yeah, the existing frame isn’t square.
