I wonder what it would look like if you put some stain on a wood scrap that has the same texture, same indentations too.  Make it slightly darker than the body so as to show more dimension. Wipe the stain off immediately and that should leave some in the recesses. Then finish the scrap piece exactly as you normally do. All you have to lose is some time, but you may come up something special.

Ron, I'm going to finish this off as I've done for my other shell projects.... a background of satin black paint and the edge molding/seastars covered in 23.5 caret gold leaf. Check put my other postings for some examples.

Everything is sealed(2), sanded, painted(2), sanded, and gessoed. The sizing and leafing will be next!
