John Morris Posted September 12, 2021 Report Posted September 12, 2021 A really neat application by the Spoon Crank showed up in my email, you can put different components together for your spoon and the template will build itself. Then you can print it out and use it to trace onto your spoon blank. Enjoy! The Spoon Crank Spoon Template Generator APP.THESPOONCRANK.COM p_toad, KevTN, HARO50 and 1 other 4 Quote
Smallpatch Posted January 2, 2022 Report Posted January 2, 2022 John Morris I really appreciate what you do to help every one when it comes to find things that will help peoples wood working abilities. How you can find some really amazing sites. But my way of coming up with something to go by and end up with a carved spoon is really simple. So I start with an out dated regular computer. Walmart then sold me a Canon #2522 simple computer which at the time was on sale for 22.95 or there abouts plus tax. It plugs in to the tower of the computer! Next I used my wife's program which she uses to change sizes of the patterns she uses making stained glass thingies.. This is a program by Rapid Resizer and at that time about 22 years ago was a free program. It is still being used for free as it is registered to us but now if a person loads that program it does cost something, Don't know how much..??? So all I have to do to carve a spoon from wood is, Find a picture on the internet, make that picture as large as It will go before I right click on it and save it to Rapid Resizer or just saved it to pictures or photo's. Then if I want to add or change anything about that spoon, redraw or glue on top of the picture I want to add or change. I go the long way with gluing that picture on to the wood to be used to carve the spoon. I first put Scotch brand packing tape on to the wood. Then spray stickup on to the top of the packing tape and lay down the pattern. I then cut out the outline of the spoon with a scroll saw. I then drill 1/16" holes in the spoon where all the voids will be. This calls for the blade to be unhooked at the top of blade and stick through the small hole then retighten the blade. Keep repeating process until all excess wood is sawed out and discarded. Next using a Dremel with a flex shaft and 1/8" bits do the carving or contouring of the wood to match the original shape of the spoon in the picture. I've never timed this procedure but maybe 1/2 hour has been used up and it will be ready to pull the tape and pattern or whats left of the pattern off and proceed with the dremel grinding...Then the shaping of the top and bottom of the spoon can be done using a 1 x 42" stationary belt sander. This procedure can be done after all the pattern and tape has been removed. Your pattern will still be on the computer if more of the same is wanted...and or if one wants to change the size of enlarging or reducing the size very easy. So when I start reading your spoon making thingy I sometimes think I need to go back to more learning or understanding certain terms and phrases. From having a picture in my hand of a spoon I can have it ready to start carving of the wood after the shape of the spoon has been cut out and all the interior has been sawed out and will be seated to start using the dremel for the final shaping of whats left of the wood in less than an hour. Smallpatch Posted January 2, 2022 Report Posted January 2, 2022 The brown spoon is very close to the exact picture but the blond spoon in almost every area was changed from the original. HARO50 and Gunny 2 Quote
