When you are building a frame either for stained glass or pictures

Featured Replies

Just do yourself a favor and use saw tooth hangers. One in the middle will hold many pounds with two small screws and your through...

Putting a cable attached on each side is not needed for 95% of all the frames you will ever build.

Generally true, but it depends a lot on size and weight.

On my last framing work, I discovered I'd gone thru the box of 144 saw-tooth hangers.  I still have a lot of rings and braided wire.

While I agree with your assessment, it seems to me that the sawtooth hangers still never hang perfectly straight, no matter how carefully I center them. So I usually stick with the eyes and wire.

I cheat. An itty bit of double stick tape does the trick. ;)

Where I worked for 26 years framing all kinds of wall art in all kinds of frames; the standard, for us, was 16 x 20 and smaller got sawtooths, anything larger got wire. All frames got felt bumpers on the lower corners.

The only exception was canvas wraps (internal frame with canvas stretched across), they were fairly light even when big (3 feet x 6 feet) they all got sawtooths.

I just now counted the hanging frames in my house right now and I counted 131 saw tooth hangers in use. I started out the wire thingy 30 years ago and about never convinced myself to switch but I did. Now this is an excess for all this stuff goes to town when there is room. But that's okay guys just go ahead and make it harder on yourselves. And more expensive!!
